Exsolution enables controlled solid-state precipitation of metal nanoparticles from metal oxides, resulting in materials that exhibit excellent catalytic properties for electrochemical energy conversion. The diverse characteristics of particles exsolved at different temperatures indicate complex mechanisms that remain unresolved. Through a series of in situ electron microscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetry experiments on La0.2Ca0.7Ti0.9Sc0.05Cu0.05O3−δ across nanoscale wedges to μm-sized powders, multiple stages of exsolution are deconvoluted with increasing thermal activation: (1) minor exsolution of anchored surface nanoparticles, (2) exsolution of endoparticles within the bulk, and (3) diffusion and coalescing in the bulk and at the surfaces. Reconstruction of the perovskite surface by formation of nanoscopic steps and terraces proceeds concurrently with endoparticle growth. Moreover, distinct exsolution characteristics are observed in the near-surface region and deeper within the bulk, resulting in spherically and orthorhombically shaped endoparticles, respectively.

Nickel provides essential catalytic properties for hydrogen electrodes in proton-conducting ceramic electrochemical cells. However, Ni diminishes the hydration capability and proton conductivity when incorporated into electrolyte materials including BaZr0.8Yb0.2O3−δ studied here. Through semiquantitative atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, density functional theory simulations, X-ray total scattering, and absorption spectroscopy, we reveal that Ni forms point defect clusters with the Yb acceptors wherein oxygen vacancies are trapped and resist hydration. The resulting effective acceptor concentration is described by point defect reactions in quantitative agreement with thermogravimetric measurements of hydration for samples substituted with 2–5 mol % Ni by BaNiO2 addition. Moreover, excess B-site cations due to NiO addition induce the formation of antiphase boundaries (APBs) that are enriched in Yb and thereby deplete the bulk of acceptors, further suppressing hydration. The adverse effects of Ni are thereby resolved into two novel mechanisms, opening new avenues in point defect engineering for high-performance electrolytes.

Composite co-ionic ceramic electrolytes that combine proton and oxide ion conductors hold potential for co-electrolysis of CO2 and H2O for syngas production due to flexible control of the transport numbers of the two charge carriers. Contrary to purely oxide ion co-electrolysis, co-ionic co-electrolysis embodies the supply of CO2 and H2O separately to the negative and positive electrodes, respectively. This study focuses on the development of a chemically stable co-ionic composite electrolyte of an acceptor-doped Ba(Zr,Ce)O3 proton conducting perovskite phase and an acceptor-doped (Ce,Zr)O2 oxide ion conducting fluorite phase, annealed at temperatures between 800 and 1600 °C. Comprehensive evaluations of the composites' microstructure, hydration, and conductivity were performed, revealing that annealing temperature and cation selection significantly impact the properties and performance of co-ionic electrolytes. Higher annealing temperatures drive cation redistribution, with the perovskite phase becoming zirconium-rich at its B-site and depleted in acceptor dopants, resulting in diminished hydration and protonic conductivity. Herein, we show that composites pairing cerium-rich fluorite phases (e.g., Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9, CGO20, or Ce0.8Y0.2O1.9, CYO20) display markedly improved performance. The BaCe0.8Y0.2O2.9 (BCY20)–CYO20 system (1 : 1 weight ratio) achieved the highest conductivity (σ = 0.01 Scm−1 at 650 °C in wet Ar), establishing itself as a promising candidate for co-ionic electrolyte applications in solid oxide electrochemical cells.

The oxygen exchange kinetics of BaGd0.3La0.7Co2O6−δ were investigated with pulsed isotope exchange (PIE) measurements in dry and humid atmospheres in the temperature range 400–600 °C in 0.005–0.21 bar O2. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) revealed exsolved Co3O4 nanoparticles dispersed on the surfaces that may contribute to the catalytic activity of the material towards the oxygen exchange reactions. The obtained oxygen exchange rate was 4.45 × 10−3 mol m−2 s−1 at 600 °C in 0.21 bar O2 with an activation energy of 0.76 eV. The rate determining step of the exchange reaction was determined to be dissociative adsorption of oxygen in both dry and humid atmospheres based on the individual rates of dissociative adsorption and incorporation, as well as pO2 dependencies of the oxygen exchange rate of around 1. The effect of water on the oxygen exchange rate was found to be dependent on the oxygen partial pressure, decreasing the rate at 0.21 bar O2 and 600 °C by a factor of approx. 2, while increasing the rate at 0.02 bar and 0.005 bar O2 by a similar amount. In situ thermogravimetric analysis was used to characterise the oxygen non-stoichiometry of the material throughout the oxygen exchange measurements.

Polar nanoregions (PNRs) are believed to play a decisive role in the local and macroscopic polarization in relaxor ferroelectrics. The limited microscopic understanding of the structure and dynamics of PNRs hampers the rational design of new lead-free materials. Here, the local structure of A-site disordered Bi0.5K0.5TiO3 (BKT) is investigated using synchrotron x-ray and neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) optimized special quasirandom structures (SQSs). DFT-relaxed SQS with a 4 × 4 × 4 supercell size can reproduce the experimental PDFs of disordered BKT, as well as the partial PDFs and total polarization, with comparable results to those reported from a combined analysis of x-ray and neutron PDF data with large-box reverse Monte Carlo methods. We find that small Bi3+-rich polar clusters are likely to be the microscopic origin of relaxor behavior in disordered BKT, and that the existence of large polar nanoregions (PNRs) is not necessary to explain the relaxor properties. Our results also highlight the great potential of the SQS approach to gain a nanoscale-to-microscopic understanding of other relaxor solid solutions.

The local and average structure of (1-x)Bi0.5K0.5TiO3-xBiFeO3 (BKT-xBFO, x = 0.25 and 0.5) solid solutions are studied by synchrotron X-ray total scattering from ambient to 773 K. Pair distribution functions (PDFs) demonstrate that disordered BKT-0.25BFO and BKT-0.5BFO show the same structural coherence length of ∼16 Å as pure Bi0.5K0.5TiO3, while their average structures are pseudocubic at all temperatures. Complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest distinctly different local structural distortions in BKT-0.25BFO and BKT-0.5BFO with random cations distribution on both A- and B-lattice. Based on the experimental and theoretical analysis, we propose that the optimal piezoelectric properties found at the structural phase boundary composition of x = 0.25 originate from tetragonal and rhombohedral polar nanoregions (PNRs) in an on average pseudocubic matrix. In contrast, for x = 0.5 there are only pseudorhombohedral polar distortions in a pseudocubic matrix phase.

The development of Mg batteries based on the interfacial charge storage mechanism, where the capacity originates from capacitive processes and the solvent-related interfacial reactions, could efficiently circumvent the challenge of intercalation-based Mg batteries with sluggish kinetics. In this work, the proposed Mg organohaloaluminate mixture electrolyte is reported to improve the charge storage performance of the graphene-supported cathodes, resulting in both high cycling stability (91% capacity retention after 2000 cycles) and high rate capability (51% capacity retention when the current density increases by 100 times). The experimental and computational studies have revealed that the exceptional cell performance originates from the optimized electrode/electrolyte interface, where the highly reversible interfacial reactions occur with the 1,2-dimethoxyethane additive in the typical all-phenyl complex electrolyte. The fast charge-transfer kinetics along the surface of highly porous and conductive graphene-supported electrodes have also been observed.

The oxidation of silicon (Si) has been extensively investigated over the past 50 years. Yet, an understanding of the mechanism and rate of liquid Si oxidation in atmospheres containing water vapor, is lacking. The effect of water vapor on the oxidation process is of particular importance in the industrial, metallurgical production and processing of liquid silicon, as a significant amount of silica fume is generated under such conditions. The generation of fume is due to the active oxidation of liquid metal in the tapping, refining, and casting steps—a major occupational health and safety challenge for the Si producers. In this work, the effect of water vapor in the atmosphere on the Si oxidation rate and fume characteristics was investigated experimentally at 1823 K in air–H2O atmospheres. Compared with oxidation in dry air, the rate of oxidation in wet air is higher, and increases to 3-fold compared to that of dry air with increasing water vapor content at 7 kPa, above which the alloy surface was passivated and the oxidation rate stable. To explain the experimental observations, Si oxidation reactions in wet atmosphere were modeled by FactSage 7.1 thermochemical software, by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and by estimates of detailed reaction thermochemistry and kinetics using statistical thermodynamics and statistical mechanics methods. The increased rate of fuming was explained by the formation of Si–O–H species in the system and the more “sticky” nature of the H2O molecule on the Si surface as compared to the O2 molecule, yielding a higher degree of oxygen utilization toward active Si oxidation, that is, SiO formation.

Potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs) have recently attracted intensive attention because of the abundant potassium resources and their low cost and high safety. However, the major challenge faced by KIBs lies in the lack of stable and high‐capacity materials for the intercalation/deintercalation of large‐size potassium ions. A unique pistachio‐shuck‐like MoSe2/C core/shell nanostructure (PMC) is synthesized herein as an advanced anode for boosting the performance of KIBs. This PMC is featured with a few layers of molybdenum selenide as the core with an expanded interlayer spacing of ≈0.85 nm, facilitating the intercalation/deintercalation of K ions, and a thin amorphous carbon as the shell, which can confine the active molybdenum selenide nanosheets during cycling for maintaining the high structural stability. Most importantly, as a whole, the PMC has the advantages of reducing the surplus hollow interior space for improving its packing density and buffering the volume expansion during the K‐ion intercalation for further enhancing the stability. As a consequence, the PMC shows a very high capacity of 322 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 over 100 cycles, and can still remain 226 mAh g−1 at 1.0 A g−1 for a long period of 1000 cycles, which is among the best‐reported KIBs anodes.

Relaxor ferroelectrics exhibit superior properties for converting mechanical energy into electrical energy, and vice versa, but the structural disorder hampers an understanding of structure–property relationships and impedes rational design of new, lead-free materials. Bi0.5K0.5TiO3 (BKT) is a prototypical lead-free relaxor ferroelectric, but the microscopic origins of polarization, nature of the ferroelectric transition (TC), and structural changes across the tetragonal to pseudocubic transition (T2) are poorly understood. Here the local and intermediate structure of BKT is studied from room temperature to above TC by pair distribution functions (PDFs) from synchrotron X-ray total scattering experiments and complemented by ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The local structure varies smoothly across T2 as well as TC, in contrast to the abrupt changes at TC inferred from conventional diffraction. Ferroelectric distortions are larger on the local scale than in the average structure, with polar Ti4+ displacements prevailing above TC. We find that local polar regions partly cancel each other below TC, while completely averaging out above, implying that BKT goes through a transition from partial to complete disorder across TC.

Due to the abundant and low‐cost K resources, the exploration of suitable materials for potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs) is advancing as a promising alternative to lithium‐ion batteries. However, the large‐sized and sluggish‐kinetic K ions cause poor battery behavior. This work reports a metallic octahedral CoSe2 threaded by N‐doped carbon nanotubes as a flexible framework for a high‐performance KIBs anode. The metallic property of CoSe2 together with the highly conductive N‐doped carbon nanotubes greatly accelerates the electron transfer and improves the rate performance. The carbon nanotube framework serves as a backbone to inhibit the agglomeration, anchor the active materials, and stabilize the integral structure. Every octahedral CoSe2 particle arranges along the carbon nanotubes in sequence, and the zigzag void space can accommodate the volume expansion during cycling, therefore boosting the cycling stability. Density functional theory is also employed to study the K‐ion intercalation/deintercalation process. This unique structure delivers a high capacity (253 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 over 100 cycles) and enhanced rate performance (173 mAh g−1 at 2.0 A g−1 over 600 cycles) as an advanced anode material for KIBs.

A rechargeable Mg battery where the capacity mainly originates from reversible reactions occurring at the electrode/electrolyte interface efficiently avoids the challenge of sluggish Mg intercalation encountered in conventional Mg batteries. The interfacial reactions in a cell based on microwave-exfoliated graphite oxide (MEGO) as the cathode and all phenyl complex (APC) as electrolyte are identified by quantitative kinetics analysis as a combination of diffusion-controlled reactions involving ether solvents (esols) and capacitive processes. During magnesiation, esols in APC electrolytes can significantly affect the electrochemical reactions and charge transfer resistances at the electrode/electrolyte interface and thus govern the charge storage properties of the MEGO cathode. In APC–tetrahydrofuran (THF) electrolyte, MEGO exhibits a reversible capacity of ∼220 mAh g–1 at 10 mA g–1, while a reversible capacity of ∼750 mAh g–1 at 10 mA g–1 was obtained in APC-1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) electrolyte. The high capacity improvement not only points to the important role of the esols in the APC electrolytes but also presents a Mg battery with high interfacial charge storage capability as a very promising and viable competitor to the conventional intercalation-based batteries.

The local and average structure of solid solutions of the multiferroic perovskite BiFeO3 is investigated by synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The average experimental structure is determined by Rietveld refinement and the local structure by total scattering data analyzed in real space with the pair distribution function (PDF) method. With equal concentrations of La on the Bi site or Mn on the Fe site, La causes larger structural distortions than Mn. Structural models based on DFT relaxed geometry give an improved fit to experimental PDFs compared to models constrained by the space group symmetry. Berry phase calculations predict a higher ferroelectric polarization than the experimental literature values, reflecting that structural disorder is not captured in either average structure space group models or DFT calculations with artificial long range order imposed by periodic boundary conditions. Only by including point defects in a supercell, here Bi vacancies, can DFT calculations reproduce the literature results on the structure and ferroelectric polarization of Mn-substituted BiFeO3. The combination of local and average structure sensitive experimental methods with DFT calculations is useful for illuminating the structure-property-composition relationships in complex functional oxides with local structural distortions.

We investigate A-site cation ordering in the ferroelectric perovskite Bi0.5K0.5TiO3 (BKT) by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and synchrotron X-ray total scattering. Using BKT as a prototypical lead-free ferroelectric perovskite with mixed A-site cations, we use a combination of theory and experiments to assess the energetics and resulting physical properties of cation ordering. Ten different Bi/K configurations in a 2 × 2 × 2 supercell were assessed by real space pair distribution functions (PDFs) and DFT calculations. None of these configurations were identified as particularly favorable from experiment or theory. Ferroelectric polarization calculated by the Berry phase method for all ten configurations yields values of 50–105 μC/cm2. This is significantly larger than previously reported experimental results in the range of 22–49 μC/cm2, indicating that BKT does not possess long-range A-site cation order. Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) modeling of the total scattering data with a 12 × 12 × 12 supercell also supports substantial A-site disorder in BKT. A 4 × 4 × 4 supercell with local cation displacements in a pseudodisordered A-site sublattice reproduces the experimentally observed polarization, implying that in a real material there are multiple local polar regions which partly cancel each other. The combination of RMC modeling of PDFs with DFT calculations should be highly applicable to other crystalline materials with sublattice disorder.

Protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (PCECs) are poised to be a critical technology for the electrification of energy and chemical industry using hydrogen. One of the main bottlenecks hodling their widespread adoption back is the sluggish oxygen evolution/reduction reactions (OER/ORR) at the positrode. Wang et al. reported that Ba0.875Fe0.875Zr0.125O3-"δ" (D-BFZ) exhibits remarkable performance as a triple conducting PCFC positrode (Wang 2022). Here, we investigate further improvement of this system by exsolving nanoparticles of Co3O4 or noble metals such as Pt, Ir, Rh and Ru for improved OER/ORR kinetics.
Combinatorial pulsed-laser deposition (c-PLD) is a novel thin film deposition technique for obtaining thin films with a continuous composition spread (CCS) (von Wenckstern 2020). D-BFZ doped with the cation species to be exsolved is deposited with a gradient in Ba-deficiency across the film. Spatially resolved synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is utilized to study the impact of Ba-deficiency on the exsolution process and the resulting nanoparticle characteristics.
Further studies involve oxygen exchange kinetics of pristine and exsolved materails using pulsed isotope exchange (PIE). Thus, the impact of the transition metal on the oxygen exchange kinetics can be directly compared between it being exsolved as nanoparticles and incorporated in the perovskite lattice.
