"The Birth of Magnetic Fields: From Galaxies to Stars"

Kreeringssammendrag

Hovedfunn:

Magnetic reconnection plays an important role in the dynamics and heating of the solar atmosphere. Quiet-Sun Ellerman bombs (QSEBs) are small-scale magnetic reconnection events that occur in the lower solar atmosphere. When viewed near the solar limb, they appear as tiny (~360 km), flame-like brightenings. With an estimated 750,000 present on the Sun at any time, their potential contribution to atmospheric heating is an open question.

In this thesis, I asses their impact using high-resolution Hβ observations from the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) on La Palma together with UV observations from the NASA’s Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), focusing on events where QSEBs and UV brightenings occur close together in space and time.

I use magnetic field extrapolations to identify four distinct scenarios which connect QSEBs and UV brightenings that involve magnetic dipoles and fan-spine topologies associated with three-dimensional null points. In the fan-spine topology, the QSEBs usually occur at its footpoints, while the UV brightening appears near the null point. Additionally, I find that interacting fan-spine configurations can produce chromospheric jets.

Overall, this thesis explores the role of QSEBs in atmospheric heating and highlights the importance of magnetic connectivity in driving small-scale solar dynamics.
