Academic Interests
Our group studies interactions between intracellular parasites (mainly viruses) and host cells. Our main model systems are infectious pancreatic disease virus (IPNV) and infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV), using cultured cells from Atlantic salmon. Using genomic (transcriptional analyses), biochemical (protein expression) and morphological analyses (fluorescence and electron microscopy), our goal is to obtain an deeper understanding of host-pathogen interactions that will be of relevance to development of new and more efficient viral vaccines. In addition we study the effects on immune function of replacing marine fish oils (a scarce resource) with plant oils (abundant) as a main feed ingredients in finfish quaculture.
