Prof. Trygve Helgaker

Prof. Helgaker was elected to the class of chemistry in recognition of his "world-leading expertise in almost all areas of quantum chemistry and its application to the calculation of molecular properties and phenomenon." The Academy also notes his significant contribution to the well-known Dalton quantum chemistry program and for being the author of the monograph "Molecular Electronic Structure Theory" together with Poul Jørgensen and Jeppe Olsen (both Aarhus University, Denmark). The book is today a reference work in the field of quantum chemistry.

Prof. Helgaker has made significant contributions to the development of density-functional theory, a commonly used approach to study the electronic structure of molecules, as well as other methods used for quantum-chemical studies. He has also made pivotal contributions to the development of molecular dynamics, where classic mechanics is coupled to quantum mechanics.

Prof. Helgaker is currently the group leader for chemistry in the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
