KI er bullshit!
On 5.12.2025, Simen Kvaal published a reader contribution piece in the online newspaper Khrono.no, Norway’s news outlet for academia. The title of the piece was “KI er bullshit” (“AI is bullshit”), and discussed how one as a researcher should consider AI generated content as bullshit in the philosophical sense.

In the area of generative AI, and in particular large language models like the generative pretrained transformer models (GPT), the notorious phenomenon referred to as “hallucination” is a big problem. In the article, Kvaal points out that recent research claims that this is a misnomer, and that “bullshit” is more apt. This also clarifies some ethical questions with regards to scientific use of large language models.
