High school student mentored at the Hylleraas enter wins prize for his research project

A high school student who has been mentored at the Hylleraas center won a prize in June 2025 for research project on molecules in strong magnetic fields.

3rd June 2025.

As a result of the contact between the Hylleraas center and Ullern senior high school (Ullern VGS), a bright student, Piotr Ul, within Ullern’s unique researcher program became interested in computational chemistry. At the researcher program the students has an extra focus on academic and industrial research, in addition to the standard senior high school courses on natural science. During their studies, students do research projects and present their findings in the form of written reports and posters.

Piotr, who had a particular interest in and talent for chemistry, decided to a research project on computational chemistry. The project focused on exotic chemical bonding in strong magnetic fields and Hylleraas member Erik Tellgren functioned as a mentor during the work.

From autumn 2024 to February of 2025, Piotr regularly visited the center to run computer calculations and analyze the results. His written report titled “Modelling Magnetic Bonds for Di- and Triatomic Molecules in the Atmospheres of White Dwarfs” was accepted for publication in the journal SPISS (Vol. 17, No. 1, 2025; https://boap.uib.no/index.php/spiss/). In addition, he was a finalist and was awarded the second prize in Konkuransen Ung Forskere (https://ungeforskere.no/finalister2025/).

Finally, on June 6, Erik visited Ullern to see Piotr and the other students present their research projects. A jury examining all presented projects, selected Piotr’s poster to be among those awarded with a Best Poster prize.

At the center, we are happy with the interest and success within computational chemistry, and wish this talented student all the best for the future.wish this talented student all the best for the future.

We wish this talented student all the best for the future.
