QSTAR: Hylleraas-member in national center for quantum technology research

The research council of Norway announced four new national centres for quantum technology research in December 2025. The SINTEF-led centre QSTAR: Centre for Quantum Computing and Applications obtained 60 MNOK over 5 years, and Hylleraas Principal Investigator Simen Kvaal is part of the consortium that submitted the application to RCN.

New national centres for quantum technology research

In 2025, RCN announced a call for four new national centres for quantum technology research. Sintef researcher Franz G. Fuchs spearheaded a collaboration with UiO, OsloMet, Simula, and NTNU: QSTAR: Centre for Quantum0 Computing and Applications. The centre is interdisciplinary, with researchers in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

Aim

The centre aims to produce new schemes for error correction, algorithms and software, that will ensure that quantum computers will be reliable and useful.

Funding

17th Dec 2025.

The centre is funded by RCN with 60 MNOK over 5 years. Hylleraas PI SImen Kvaal is part of the group that submitted the application, and will work on quantum computing algorithms for quantum chemistry.
