Hylleraas PI David Balcells designed and taught a research project pilot for a selected group of students from Lambertseter high school. The focus of the project was on the use of AI for drug discovery. For five days, the students were at the Hylleraas Center aiming at these learning objectives:

  • Organic chemistry and its connection to medicines
  • Use of computers for chemistry: Formulation, structure, visualization
  • SMILES: A computer language for chemistry
  • Appropriate use of large language models (LLMs) for research in science
  • How medicines work in our body
  • Design rules for drug discovery

The project activities addressed these research questions:

  • How can large LLMs be assessed for scientific research?
  • How do computers work with chemistry?
  • Do LLMs understand chemistry?
  • How can complex biomolecules be visualized and studied?
  • Can LLMs help us to find and design new medicines?

This project is part of a growing collaboration between Kim Granholt (Lambertseter Videregående) and Prof. Steven Wilson (UiO Department of Chemistry).
