Field memories 2016

Here are some selections from field work during 2016:

Adelie penguins in Antarctica: Norith spent 3 months in Adelie land, Dumont D'Urville, samling and observing the Adelie penguins during breeding season along with collaborator Celine LeBohec. See Norith's blog from the stay here.

Herring gulls - urban vs rural contamination: Ellen sampled herring gull blood for her master thesis in the urban site Oslofjord and at the rural site Hornøya in Finnmark.

Barnacle geese breeding in Kongsfjorden: Daniel spent 6 weeks in Ny-Ålesund, observing and sampling barnacle geese for a subproject for his PhD along with collaborator Maarten Loonen. Daniel will post updates from field, lab and results.

Springtails on Svalbard! Silje did a tour various seabird cliffs near Kongsfjorden and Ny-Ålesund, along with her supervisors Katrine Borgå, Hans Petter Leinaas, Ketil Hylland (all UiO) and Geir Wing Gabrielsen (NP), sampling springtails and their homes for contaminant analyses performed at NILU with Dorte Herzke.

Mercury accumulation in contrasting lakes: Cathrine has sampled two lakes in southern Norway throughout the year along with co-supervisor Amanda Poste (NIVA), to analyse the effect of different dissolved organic matter status on the mercury accumulation in the lake food webs.

LUMS: Torben has been sampling and establishing cultures of benthic copepods for his experiments on effects of multiple stressors on life history traits of coastal copepods (LUMS).

Coastal ecosystems: effect of terrestrial dissolved organic matter on zooplankton in Storelva: In this NIVA project lead by Amanda Poste, she and Anders Ruus have sampled water, phytoplankton and zooplankton throughout the year. Sabrina will work with Amanda on some of these results as part of her PhD.

Ellen, Silje and Cathrine will defend their master theses in June 2017, stay tuned for exciting results!
