Research interest

The electron microscopy unit was established to provide up-to-date methodology for the observation of biological specimens in both the transmission and scanning electron microscope. In order to achieve this goal we established and developed new methods over the years and provide now a broad spectrum of methods for our users. Our main research interest is the low temperature observation of fully-hydrated specimens and especially immuno-cytochemistry on ultrathin cryosections in the transmission electron microscope. We use these methods to study the cell biology and structure of viruses particularly of fish pathogens.

My contributions in the field of biological electron microscopy have been published in international journals  and resulted in a book written for the Royal Microscopy Handbook Series. I have successfully established a national and international network of collaborations with other laboratories. The collaboration aims at improving teaching in this field and offering advanced practical courses for participants worldwide and at developing new methodological approaches to specimen preparation and electron microscopy of biological specimens and to understand basic cellular mechanisms such as e.g.membrane trafficking and virus assembly.
