Academic interests

My areas of interest include environmental microbiology, mycology, fungal diversity and ecology, with an especial focus on the fungi associated with indoor environments and human-made materials. More specifically, during my research career, I have been investigating a variety of environments related to four scientific disciplines: plant pathology (crop soil and rhizosphere), conservation of cultural heritage (rock-art caves and monuments), material biodeterioration (fuel systems, solar panels and construction materials) and indoor microbiomes (houses, kindergartens and hospitals).

I am currently leading the Mycospitalomics project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, which studies the hospital mycobiomes associated with the invasive fungal infections and the emergence of antimicrobial drug resistance

I have participated in two projects at the Section for Aquatic Biology and Toxicology (AQUA): Auto-eDNA (Miljødirektoratet) and Metaomics (UiO:Energy), both dealing with the development and automatization of cutting-edge molecular techniques (eDNA and metaomics approaches) for microbiological research in freshwater ecosystems.

In my previous MSCA MycoIndoor project at the Oslo Mycology Group, we characterized the indoor mycobiomes in Norwegian buildings (hundreds of houses and kindergartens) by combining dust and fungal-colonized material sampling with high-throughput amplicon sequencing (DNA metabarcoding). This project received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 741332.
