Natural variation in the strength of interploidy barrier in Arabidopsis arenosa

Triploid block is a prime reproductive barrier between individuals differing in complete number of chromosome sets (ploidy) and thus a key player in polyploid speciation. We describe natural variation in the strength of the triploid block within a naturally diploid-autotetraploid species Arabidopsis arenosa by means of crossing experiments and seed microscopy. Using RNAseq we further investigate similarity in the genetic basis of this barrier across indeendent ploidy contact zones in this species.

Accumulation and phytotoxic effects of emerging PFAS in Arabidopsis

Our lab at NTNU is interested in understanding the molecular and biochemical mechanisms plants employ to cope with environmental stress, with a specific focus on pathogen infection and heat stress. We are particularly keen in unravelling how the regulated death of damaged or infected cells contributes to the adaptation to these stresses. We focus on plant cell death from a non-cell autonomous perspective, considering the decision-making process that leads to its activation and the implications for neighbouring cells.

In this talk, I will introduce a new research collaboration aimed at studying human-made organic pollutants as source of environmental stress in plants. l will share our first findings on the accumulation and phytotoxic effects of emerging PFAS (per and poly -fluoroalkyl substances) in Arabidopsis and how we are beginning to use spatial omics to resolve with spatial resolution the impact of these chemicals (and other stress conditions) on plant molecular and biochemical responses.
