Innovation of cell structures

Eukaryote cells are morphologically complex and are internally composed of multiple compartments and structures that are vital for their existence. We study how and when these structures evolved and investigate the genetic basis of morphology. Hence we study the link between genes and phenotypes by studies of genomes and molecular evolution. We study the genetic changes underlying alterations of the cytoskeleton and the gene regulatory mechanisms that are involved in creating cell shape. Gene expression studies at subcellular level is currently being studied to reveal localization and gradient of of mRNA in cells by using green algal study systems.
