"Mycorrhiza and root-associated fungi of the arctic plant Cassiope teragona"

In this project we will use Illumina high-throughoutput  sequencing to characterize the fungal community in the roots of C.tetragona plants from the natural landscape in the high arctic of Svalbard and in the northern Scandinavian arctic.

We will compare the fungal diversity and composition to latitude, edaphic factors, surrounding plant community composition, and environmental variables. In addition we will investigate the mycorrhizal status and potential shift from ericoid to ectomycorrhiza in the arctic, as a possible mechanism for coping with extreme environmental pressure and as a reason for the circumpolar success of this species.
