Escherichia coli can, under specified conditions, produce nanoparticles when challenged with Au and Pd metal salts. The nanoparticles have catalytic properties comparable to known industrial catalysts. The green and cheap formation of those nanoparticles in bacteria makes them promising candidates as alternative catalysts. The biological mechanism of particle formation is only partially determined and still under investigation.

Biosynthesis of nanoparticles (AU and Pd) via bacteria
The goals of this project are to find the genes governing the synthesis using recombinant DNA technologies, to optimize reaction protocols, to upscale production of particles, and to characterize them using electron microscopy (EM) and compare their catalytic properties to a known industrial catalysts.
