The iGEM Competition is an annual, world wide synthetic biology event that gives students the opportunity to push the boundaries of synthetic biology by tackling everyday issues facing the world. All Master's students at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UiO, are welcome to join UiO's iGEM team.
The iGEM competition is organized by a US-based foundation that has its origins at MIT in Boston – and has been run with ever-increasing international visibility since 2003. In 2019, more than 6000 students per year were part of the competition, competing in 353 teams from more than 40 countries – all of them travelling to Boston for the Finals. In 2020, the competition was slightly smaller, and had to be run as an online event for the first time in its history.
