Main research findings

This dissertation is motivated by understanding how fossil fuel incumbents navigate sustainability transitions with respect to the rising pressure to change towards sustainability-oriented solutions. Incumbents simultaneously engage in change and maintenance mechanisms through discursive framing that allows them to engage in opposing technology domains of O&G and renewable energy. Observing the incumbent mechanisms from a collective level reflects how their efforts shape the overall direction of the entire O&G industry, which shows a continuous engagement in fossil fuels, reshaping the meaning of O&G under a more sustainability-friendly connotation to shield harmful impacts. The ongoing engagement in O&G will not allow a radical reduction of emissions necessary to secure a sustainable future.
