Main research findings

The new processes and responsibilities introduced by the GDPR have severe implications for individuals’ privacy if not accounted for. However, most organisations are still trying to achieve GDPR compliance for their own system, rather than considering the whole data ecosystem. This thesis contributes to the issue raised above by comprising four papers that examine three specific GDPR procedures in the context of the European data ecosystem. Firstly, it covers data subject rights. To provide aid in the implementation of data subject rights, offering a single point of contact for individuals, and increasing interoperability between different organisations, the concept of Data Subject Rights as a Service was introduced. Specific attention was given to the authentication process for data subject rights, which literature revealed as a major security risk. An architecture utilising the EU Digital Identity Wallet. The second procedure covered is the Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA). A survey of DPIA practices in organisations was conducted to find out how organisations structure their DPIAs and address the challenges of the federated data ecosystem. Finally, a metadata model for data sharing was proposed to assert lawful processing and sharing of data. A central aspect of the model are data transaction agreements.
