“How Cognitive-Inspired Machine Learning Approaches (or Robotic Applications) Can Support Industrial Decarbonization”
Time and place: November 24, 2025 11:15 AM. Kristen Nygaards sal (5370), Ole-Johan Dahls hus.
Main research findings
The rapid rise of Industry 4.0 technologies has transformed industrial systems through increased automation and connectivity. However, many current automation solutions still rely on predefined, static rules that struggle to operate effectively in dynamic and unpredictable environments. In such contexts, humans remain the key adaptive agents, with learning as their primary strength in responding flexibly to changing situations. This thesis adopts a human-centric approach to adaptation by focusing on how human knowledge and expertise can be captured, transferred, and embedded into autonomic systems. It draws inspiration from human cognition and consciousness to examine how mechanisms of awareness can inform the design of adaptive learning frameworks. The framework enables industrial systems to learn continuously, adapt autonomously, and optimize their performance in real time.
By linking human expertise, artificial intelligence, and cognitive principles, this thesis contributes to the foundation for intelligent, resilient, and collaborative industrial automation, aligned with the vision of Industry 5.0.
