Main research findings
Handling vast amounts of data efficiently is a growing challenge in many industries, from healthcare to manufacturing. This PhD research presents new ways to design, test, and optimize Big Data Pipelines—the automated processes that move and digest data across distributed computing systems.
The study introduces a domain-specific language that simplifies how data pipelines are created, thus empowering non-technical users. It also proposes a container-based approach that allows pipelines to be modular, scalable, and adaptable across different computing environments (Cloud, Fog and Edge). A key innovation is the dry-run profiling method, which enables cost-effective testing of data pipelines before full-scale deployment. This prevents unnecessary infrastructure costs and optimizes resource use. Additionally, the research develops an intelligent scheduling system that improves execution speed and reduces costs by allocating resources based on estimated hardware needs.
These solutions have been successfully tested in domains such as digital healthcare (remote patient monitoring) and Industry 4.0 (automated quality control in manufacturing), demonstrating their real-world impact. By making Big Data processing more efficient and accessible, this research paves the way for smarter, faster, and more sustainable data-driven decision-making across industries.
