Detecting Cyber Threats in Critical Infrastructure: Strengthening the Energy Sector
Our society depends more than ever on digital systems, and a reliable energy supply is the backbone of modern life. Systems that operate the power grid are becoming increasingly digital, creating new cyberrisks. Detecting threats early can prevent damage, and tools already exist to identify these threats.
But, as my research shows, many detection tools are not well-suited for the unique challenges of power grid systems. Organizations also face practical barriers, including unclear regulations, limited resources, and gaps in expertise. These issues, highlighted in surveys and studies of the energy sector, leave critical systems exposed to potential attacks.
Therefore, I tested tools designed to catch cyberattacks in a realistic power grid environment. Systems based on clear, predefined rules worked better than those relying on spotting unusual activity, showing that solutions need to be simple and tailored to the sector's needs. By identifying barriers and sharing strategies for improvement, my work helps regulators, companies, and technology developers create better defenses.
This research strengthens the foundation for protecting the power grid, ensuring society’s energy supply remains secure and reliable in an increasingly digital world.
