“A Deleuzian perspective on the orchestration of inter-organizational collaboration”
Time and place: March 10, 2025 11:15 AM. Auditorium SmallTalk, Ole-Johan Dahls hus
Main research findings
In this thesis, I investigate the emergence of novel and complex interorganizational collaboration arrangements, like industry-spanning digital platform ecosystems and interorganizational networks. Through a reconceptualization of the existing orchestration concept, I develop and propose a new theory of how an interorganizational collaboration arrangement emerges as a result of the intentional actions performed by a focal formal organization. The theory argues that a new interorganizational collaboration arrangement emerges when a focal organization can use the creation of economic value as an actual structural ground to signal that a potential interorganizational collaboration arrangement can co-create value before actually having co-created any value. This theoretical argument is based on the process philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and an empirical study of a digital platform ecosystem emergence process.
With this enhanced understanding, the thesis makes important contributions to both existing research and practice. Specifically, the thesis contributes to existing information systems and organization and management studies by putting forward a new process ontological understanding that emphasizes the potential state and temporality of an interorganizational collaboration arrangement. The thesis also contributes to managerial practice by elucidating the specific challenges a focal firm faces when trying to persuade external organizations to become members of an envisioned arrangement.
