Software Carpentry Boot Camp 2012

The Norwegian Sequence Centre, in collaboration with the Computational Life Science initiative, is pleased to announce a Boot Camp organised by Software Carpentry on September 17-18, at the University of Oslo (Blindern campus). See below for details.

Since 1997, Software Carpentry has taught scientists and engineers the concepts, skills, and tools they need to use and build software more productively.

Our goal is to help scientists and engineers become more productive by teaching them basic computing skills like program design, version control, testing, and task automation. In this two-day boot camp, short tutorials will alternate with hands-on practical exercises. Participants will be encouraged both to help one another, and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems during and between sessions. There will be online follow up sessions for 6 to 8 weeks extending the material from the boot camp.

WHO: The course is aimed at postgraduate students and other scientists who are familiar with basic programming concepts (like loops, conditionals, arrays, and functions) but need help to translate this knowledge into practical tools to help them work more productively. We encourage people to come in small teams from the same research group/project.

Requirements: If you are bringing a Linux or Mac OS X laptop, everything you’ll need on the first day is already installed. If you are bringing a Windows laptop, please go to http://cygwin.com/install.html and run setup.exe (linked from that page) to install the Bash shell and a few other goodies before you arrive—we’ll help you with everything
else you need over lunch on day 1.

CONTENT: The syllabus for this boot camp will include:

* using the shell to do more in less time
* using version control to manage and share information
* basic Python programming
* how (and how much) to test programs
* working with relational databases

CONTACT: Please mail info@software-carpentry.org for more information.

REGISTRATION: Free, but participants need to arrange for their own accommodation.
