Summary:
The course is assessed overall as predominantly positive, with responses ranging from Somewhat good to Very good and few Somewhat bad. The difficulty level is perceived as either Difficult or Appropriate. The workload is mostly rated as Large to Too large, and is thus perceived as high relative to the number of credits. The scope of topics is described as ranging from Large to mainly Appropriate. Attendance at lectures varies, and quality is assessed as evenly distributed from Somewhat bad to Very good, while teaching is generally described as Important for learning outcomes. The formative assessments are mainly perceived as appropriately difficult, Very important for learning, but with a clearly Too large workload. The summative assessment is rated from Low to High in difficulty, and it is mentioned both that the exam was easier than the teaching suggested and that certain formal matters surrounding the resit exam were problematic. The availability of lecturers and teaching assistants is mainly described as Quite good to Very good.
Students particularly highlight good weekly exercises that provide practical experience with the material and make it possible to explore applications in depth. Several describe the subject as interesting and fun, with a good interplay between theory and practice and as a solid introduction to more advanced topics. The subject matter and level of mathematics are perceived by some as well suited to the purpose, and digital channels (especially Mattermost) are highlighted as useful for dialogue between students and lecturers.
Good mix of theory and practical. Good stepping stone into more advanced AI subjects.
At the same time, many point to significant challenges with workload, structure and information. The mandatory assignments, particularly the second one, are described as very large in scope for a 10‑credit course, with the consequence that time for exam preparation is reduced, and several students experienced having to request extensions. There are calls for better sorting and more consistent labelling of course materials and past exams, clearer and more coordinated information on the course pages, a clearer and more gradual introduction to the material, less text‑heavy slides and more varied explanations. Some feel that inquiries go unanswered or are answered late, and one student reports serious dissatisfaction with the administration of the resit exam, including advanced language in the exam text and the course lecturer not being present in the exam room at the announced time.
The amount of time spent on the mandatory assignments required time that could have been used on exam preparation.
About the course evaluation
The course evaluation is done by students in FUI (Fagutvalget ved Institutt for informatikk), and is based on questionnaires made at the end of each semester.
