Summary:
Students’ overall impression of the course is generally positive, with most ratings between Quite good and Somewhat good. The difficulty level is perceived as high: a clear majority answer Difficult or Too difficult. The workload in relation to credits is mostly seen as Appropriate, though several describe it as Large or Too large, and most find the scope of topics Large. Lectures are generally rated as Quite good, and most students attended them regularly. The availability of teachers and teaching assistants is mostly experienced as good. Ongoing assessments are considered to have medium to high difficulty and a relatively large workload, but also to be Important for learning. The graded assessment (exam) is perceived as clearly Too difficult by all who answered that question.
Students highlight the content as exciting and interesting, with a broad selection of topics that fit together well. The lecturers are repeatedly described as good, engaged and knowledgeable, and several appreciate the extensive documentation and study resources, including GitHub material, recordings and opportunities for practical work and coding. The science fair and mandatory assignments are seen as motivating and useful, and digital channels such as Mattermost and Discourse are described as working well.
The teaching was very good, and the professor is a passionate and understanding teacher. It is therefore sad that the exam (feeling like a slap in the face) probably makes people forget that the teaching part of the course was positive.
At the same time, there is strong criticism of the exam and some concerns about structure and alignment. Many describe the exam as extremely difficult, covering only a small part of the syllabus and not allowing them to demonstrate the breadth of what they had learned. Several also react to what they see as unusually strict grading with no points for partially correct answers. In addition, some students call for more structured lectures, clearer expectations for what to prepare and what will be covered in each session, and a more developed and active plan for group sessions, which are perceived as largely unused potential. Suggested improvements include updating parts of the curriculum, making it easier to see which slides were actually used, clarifying the scope of the curriculum at the end of the semester, and designing future exams that better reflect the breadth and emphasis of the teaching.
Eksamen var kjempevanskelig og testet oss ikke i helheten av faget! Jeg og mange andre satt igjen med så mye kunnskap vi ikke fikk vist.
About the course evaluation
The course evaluation is done by students in FUI (Fagutvalget ved Institutt for informatikk), and is based on questionnaires made at the end of each semester.
