Summary:
Students generally have a good impression of the course, with most ratings ranging from Quite good to Very good. The difficulty level is unanimously perceived as Difficult, and the workload is largely considered High relative to the number of credits. The syllabus scope is seen as Appropriate, and both lectures and other teaching activities are mostly rated from Quite good to Very good. Mandatory assignments are regarded as difficult (High to Too high) with a Large associated workload, while the graded assessment is considered Appropriate. Lecturer and teaching assistant availability is rated as Very good.
A key positive aspect is the course’s practical relevance and clear connection to working life and future career opportunities. Several students highlight the strong alignment between lectures and lab assignments, and many report that they learn best through the labs and close supervision in lab sessions. Teaching beyond lectures is viewed as Important for learning, and many express substantial mastery and satisfaction when completing mandatory tasks.
Good labs and curriculum.
The main challenge concerns the difficulty and design of the assignments. Many describe the tasks as very demanding, with unclear or partly incorrect descriptions, resulting in a reliance on teaching assistant support to make progress. The workload in labs is perceived as high for both students and assistants, and some note it was at times unrealistic to expect everyone to complete the assignments. Some students also request more or deeper coverage of topics such as VHDL, reconfiguration, and verification, and comment that some lectures spend too much time on videos rather than discussion.
Sometimes a bit unclear what the obligatory assignment asks of us, and also sometimes quite hard to see if you have accomplished the task.
Repeated suggestions for improvement include clearer and better-formulated assignment texts, accurate information, and clearer expectations to make tasks more manageable for all students. Additional teaching assistant resources or a larger position allocation are requested to improve follow-up capacity. It is also suggested that lectures be used more for discussion and processing of material instead of video presentations, and that assignments be made more accessible on the course website, for instance by collecting them in a dedicated folder beyond the timetable.
In some lectures we just watched some videos. Maybe the lectures could be more discussion of the videos rather than watching them.
About the course evaluation
The course evaluation is done by students in FUI (Fagutvalget ved Institutt for informatikk), and is based on questionnaires made at the end of each semester.
