About the project
The project will provide a general evaluation of the pollution status for Hg in Guizhou, and assess the impacts in environmental and socio-economic terms. Main mercury releasing sources in the region will be identified, as will their anticipated contributions to elevated concentrations in the environment and damages. Emission and release factors for important sources will be established. A selection of abatement options and their costs will be assessed. Information on sources, their impacts and their estimated damage costs will together with identified reduction options and related costs form the basis for cost benefit considerations of the various abatement policies. This will form recommendations of policies for the Chinese authorities to consider.
The project is funded under an agreement between the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
The Chinese State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), through the Foreign Economic Cooperation Office (FECO) is responsible for implementation of the project.
Project leaders for the technical implementation is Tsinghua University and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA)
