Anticipatory competency

What will the future look like? Nobody knows, but the knowledge from our courses enables us to say quite a lot about how the future can and should unfold. The future will also be shaped by the technological development that our knowledge and research contribute to. Awareness of these possibilities is an important part of work for sustainability.

What is anticipatory competency?

Anticipatory competency is about

  • understand and evaluate different future scenarios: possible, probable and desirable
  • create their own vision for the future
  • apply the precautionary principle
  • consider the possible consequences of choices
  • deal with risk and uncertainty

Anticipatory competency in a MM-context

Our fields of science work with the future in different ways. Some examples are

  • development of future technology
  • use of models for climate, ecosystems and other things where the effects of various future drivers can be seen
