Self-awareness competency

What is the most important thing I can do to contribute to the changes I think are important? To contribute constructively, it is important to be aware of one's strengths and weaknesses, needs and perceptions, and one's role in interaction with others.

What is self-awareness?

Self-awareness is about

  • the ability to reflect on one's own role in society, locally and globally
  • continuously evaluate own choices and actions
  • be aware and reflexive on your own feelings and desires

Self-awareness in a MN-context

Reflections on one's own skills and attitudes are something that has traditionally had little awareness in our education. When looking for a job, our students are less good at describing their generic competencies than at describing their more specific knowledge. Therefore, it can potentially be of great value to take small steps to make it possible for students to train this competency.

Examples of teaching activities

  • Reflection notes on own learning and own role in group activities
  • Writing exercises that make students aware of their own perceptions and knowledge related to the topic being taught
  • Group discussions in a safe learning environment that allow students to share their own views and challenge each other
