The Norwegian school system consists of a seven-year primary school (grades 1–7, ages 6–13), followed by lower secondary school (grades 8–10, ages 13–16) and upper secondary school (grades 11–13, ages 16–19). While in primary and lower secondary school there is no streaming into different tracks, in upper secondary school, which is our main focus of attention here, there is a track structure which will be described in section 2 of the chapter.

This is a report of an analysis of some of the data generated by a national survey of teaching approaches used in higher education mathematics courses. The overall purpose of the survey was to explore how widespread is the use of teaching approaches that might promote students’ active learning of mathematics. The paper includes a brief presentation of the authors meaning of the expression “teaching actions that have the potential to promote active learning”. The analysis focuses on the responses of 95 lecturers working in 13 Norwegian HE institutions. The goal is to expose underlying patterns in lecturers’ responses to questions about the teaching actions they may incorporate in their practice. The analysis incorporates descriptive statistics (e.g., mean scores) and exploratory factor analysis to expose underlying reasons for patterns of lecturers’ responses. Qualitative, interpretative approaches are used, both in the design of the survey instrument and in making sense of the outcome from the statistical analysis.

This presentation/paper describes the beginning of a developmental process leading to the creation of a survey instrument to explore the use of active learning approaches in higher education mathematics. The paper begins by arguing a relation between active learning and the conference theme “constructive alignment”. The first stages of the developmental process are based on a “Delphi-study” research design in which the meanings of “active learning” and teaching/approaches that may promote active learning are elicited from a selected group of students, mathematics instructors, mathematicians and mathematics education researchers. The Delphi-study is described and the analysis of outcomes from the first stage of the study are reported in this paper. The conference presentation will also include details from the second stage of the study that is planned at the time of writing. A working definition of “active learning” is established from the study, together with a number of teaching/learning approaches that might promote active learning in mathematics. The paper concludes with reflections on how the outcomes of the study will influence the design and content of the survey instrument. It is hoped the discussion at the conference will also inform the further development of the instrument.

Through our work with teaching and learning mathematics at university level, we experience that students can benefit from tips on how to study, and in particular how to study mathematics. The Department of Mathematics at the University of Oslo (UiO) published in autumn 2016 a booklet entitled “Studietips – til begynnerstudenter i matematikktunge realfag” (Study tips – to beginner students in mathematics-heavy sciences). It was handed out to the beginner students at the Faculty for Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MN) and published on the web for anyone to use [1]. The booklet gives good advice on how to study, in particular how to study mathematics, and on life as a student. It is based on surveys conducted amongst older students, on our experiences teaching and supervising beginner students and earlier work on study tips and mathematical thinking. We have also given a seminar on study tips for the students. Prior to this seminar we sent out a “study tips survey”, giving the students the opportunity to reflect upon how they work with mathematics. The answers to the survey revealed that many beginner students reflect very well and have good intentions about their studying. However, we were also able to make some students reconsider their thoughts. In this paper we will discuss the study tips and the “study tips survey”. In particular, we will consider some of the challenges one faces in the transition between upper secondary school and university when it comes to teaching and learning mathematics.

Beginner student courses in mathematics in higher education have had high failure rates across the country. A national study [1] conducted by the Norwegian Association of Higher education Institutions (UHR) in 2013 showed that students need help with the transition from upper secondary school to university or college. As one of the initiatives following this study, UHR joined forces with Centre for Research, Innovation and Coordination of Mathematics Teaching (MatRIC) financing the production of mathematics videos that would help students with the transition from upper secondary school to university or college. A group of six people from four higher education institutions, all with experience from teaching mathematics to upper secondary school students and/or first year university students, formed the video production group. So far the group has produced over 100 videos with a total running time of over 1000 minutes. These videos are freely available to everyone at the MatRIC TV web site [2] as a national resource. The production group has made several decisions about the presentation of the mathematical material and the design of the videos along the way. In this contribution to the MNT conference we will discuss these choices and our experiences with producing these videos, and also their impact.

Applying Jennings theory and the M-series to modular isomorphism problems.

It is an open problem whether the isomorphism class of a finite p-group is determined by its group ring over a field of characteristic p. In this thesis we present the theory of Jennings, which gives invariants of the group ring in terms of the so-called Brauer-Jennings-Zassenhaus series (from now on, just M-series). We then use these invariants to attack modular isomorphism problems. Defining a suitable function, we give a non-recursive definition of the M-series of an abelian p-group. This yields a new proof that finite abelian p-groups split (that is, are determined by their group ring). We also show that extraspecial p-groups split when p is an odd prime. Applying the so-called "kernel size" technique, we extend a result by Donald Passman which says that D_8 and the quaternions split over GF(2), by showing that these groups do in fact split over any field whose cardinalitu is an odd power of 2. Finally, we split a pair of groups of order p^6.

Let G be a finite p-group. The problem whether (the isomorphism class of) G is determined by its group algebra over the field of p elements (the modular group algebra) is usually referred to as the modular isomorphism problem. We consider how cohomological invariants determined by the modular group algebra can be used to shed some new light on this problem. In particular, we give a new class of finite p-groups which can be distinguished using the modular group algebra.
