Section for Pharmaceutics and Social Pharmacy

The Section for Pharmaceutics and Social Pharmacy teaches and does research within the fields of formulation science, drug delivery, pharmaceutical technology and social pharmacy.

Pharmaceutics

The overall aim for the research in pharmaceutics at the Department is focused around the common heading: Development of nano- and microstructured formulations in addition to new formulation technologies for improved functionality in the delivery of drugs, pharmaceutical ingredients and biopharmaceuticals”.

Currently, the research is structured within three partly overlapping research groups:

  • SiteDel (focusing on formulations of nanosize, in situ forming gel systems and drug permeability)
  • PharmaLuxLab (focusing on formulation of photoreactive compounds and biomolecules)
  • PersDrug (focusing on personalized dosing and patient-centric formulation design and production).

The research requires novel strategies and expertise to be drawn from across the boundaries between the traditional disciplines of science. The groups have a broad national- and international collaborative network within academia, pharmaceutical industry, university hospitals and hospital pharmacies.

Social Pharmacy

Research within social pharmacy at the Department of Pharmacy is performed by PharmaSafe (the PharmacoEpidemiology & Drug Safety research group), investigating the safety and optimal use of medications, on both the individual and the societal level. The research activities are founded on two main focuses:

  • Pharmacoepidemiology, eHealth and registry-based research
  • Social and clinical pharmacy

Using epidemiological methods, we address questions of drug safety that are challenging to study in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Our research projects include monitoring of drug utilization in special populations (e.g., pregnant women, children and elderly), medication errors and adherence, health economic research, and analysis of medication safety on patient outcomes, including genetic and epigenetic contributions. Our researchers have expertise in a wide range of topics, including pharmaceutical sciences, teratology, epidemiology, biostatistics, neurosciences, psychology, genetics, epigenetics and health economics. We collaborate closely with national and international partners.
