Simen Kvaal, a researcher at the Hylleraas Center and member of the Young Academy of Norway, is now half way into his (1.5 M EUR) ERC Starting Grant BIVAQUM. In this project, Simen, together with two post. docs and one PhD student, dive into the fundamentals of quantum theory via the so-called bivariational principle.
The bivariational principle, a generalization of the standard variation principle, opens up completely new ways of deriving and analyzing quantum-mechanical methods. In particular, both single- and multireference coupled-cluster theory may be approached in novel ways using the bivariational approach.
