Procedure for field work at IBV

This procedure is a supplement to UiOs HSE Procedure during field work.

Purpose

The procedure shall ensure that all field work and field courses at IBV are carried out in a responsible manner and according to rules and regulations.
The procedure shall ensure that a risk assessment of the field work is performed (formerly Field card for field responsible), and that this risk assessment is made available for all participants.
The procedure shall also ensure that all field participants fill in field cards.

Scope

The procedure applies for employees and students at IBV who participate in field work/field courses.

Responsibilities

For projects the project leader is automatically the field responsible.
The course responsible is responsible for field courses.
The field responsible is responsible for carrying out the field work according to procedure. The field responsible may delegate tasks connected to the field work.
At IBV, we have an engineer (Anders Herland) with a particular responsibility for field work, including animal research that requires application.

Method

All field work should be risk assessed according to UiO's Risk assessment procedure.
You will find IBV's template for risk assesment, as well as examples of different risk assessments here (link).

The field responsible should make sure the field work participants make necessary preparations. The responsible should also get advise from certified personnel if needed (i.e. need for vaccinations etc).
The field responsible must complete Risikovurdering av feltarbeid IBV/NHM (tidligere feltkort for feltansvarlig, only in Norwegian). If the field work lasts for a longer period with several shorter trips (i.e. water sampling every month for 2 years), the form should be submitted annually.
The field responsible should also submit Field card for field participants if they participate in the field work.
For more extensive field work, the section's HMS-i, HMS-i for field work and/or head administration should be informed.

The field participants must submit Field card for field participants for EVERY field trip. See information in the webform for further information.

Field work including animals
Capture and tagging of wild animals for scientific purposes must be approved. (Read more here, only in Norwegian).
Please contact PMSK at IBV for guidance.

Documentation
The Risk assessments of field work is archived as answers to the webform. Field cards are deleted automatically after 12 months.
