About the Biological Research Station and Conference Centre
Biologen Research Station
Established by Michael Sars and Fridtjoft Nansen in 1894, Biolgen is one of Norway's oldest marine research stations. Situated right at the sill of the Oslofjord, it provides easy access to both the inner and outer fjords and their distinct marine communities.
Within the station area, one can deploy loggers and other scientific equipment, such as underwater microscopes and experimental setups, quickly and easily. One has access to a rocky shore algae community directly from the station. Researchers can take samples in the vicinity using the station's boats.
The main station building covers 130m2. It includes a basement with aquariums and laboratories, a main living room with further laboratories and a course hall, and a third floor, a furnished loft with kitchen, living room, offices and guest rooms.
Tollboden
Tollboden is the station's teaching and conference center located in beautiful downtown Drøbak. The three-storey house is built around 1860, serving as a storehouse for the Norwegian Customs Authority until the 1960s. The house was given by the Customs Service as a gift to the University of Oslo in 1962.
