  'Ceramium strictum' is an illegitimate name that has been used in a wide sense to encompass non-spiny, partially corticated North Atlantic populations of Ceramium. At the other extreme, several species have been recognized even within a single restricted geographic region (Skagerrak-Baltic). We combined molecular and interfertility analyses to assess relationships among samples of 'C. strictum' from five geographic regions (Skagerrak-Baltic, northeastern America, the Canary Islands, western Norway, and the British Isles), with emphasis on the Skagerrak-Baltic Sea salinity gradient. Sequences of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and the plastid rubisco spacer region were obtained from these samples, from two other partially corticated species (C. siliquosum and C. deslongchampsii) and from two species described as fully corticated (C. pallidum and C. secundatum). In phylogenetic analyses using the most divergent species, C. deslongchampsii, as an outgroup, C. secundatum was basal to a clade containing all other taxa. The populations from the Skagerrak-Baltic region had virtually identical sequences and were interfertile, suggesting that they belong to the same species (C. tenuicorne). The populations of ¿C. strictum¿ from the other geographic regions were highly divergent and may represent different species (tentatively named Ceramium strictum sensu Harvey, and Ceramium spp. 1-3). Formal taxonomic recognition of these putative species must await the results of thorough morphologic analyses. Unexpectedly, C. tenuicorne was sister to C. siliquosum-C. pallidum in a well-supported clade that did not include the other ¿C. strictum¿ populations. Thus, cortication is probably homoplastic and useless as indicator of species relationships in this group of Ceramium.

  FOOD CHAIN STUDIES IN A NORWEGIAN KELP FOREST BASED ON STABLE CARBON ISOTOPE ANALYSIS S. FREDRIKSEN & J. RUENESS University of Oslo, Department of Biology, Section for Marine Botany, P.O. Box 1069 Blindern, N-0316 Oslo, Norway. Email: stein.fredriksen@bio.uio.no, jan.rueness@bio.uio.no Laminaria hyperborea is the dominant and canopy forming kelp species along the Norwegian coast. It creates a three dimentional forest which is habitat for numerous other algae and animals. Food chain studies have been carried out in the kelp forest by using stable isotopes. The young kelp plants have a more negative carbon (13C/12C) ratio (- 21¿ to -24¿) than the old plants (- 15¿ to 17¿). No significant annual variation was found. Some red algae (RED ALGAE I, fig. 1, e.g. Palmaria palmata, Polysiphonia elongata, Rhodomela confervoides) had ratios equal to the old kelp plants, while others (RED ALGAE II, fig. 1, e.g. Delesseria sanguinea, Phycodrys rubens, Ptilota gunneri) had ratios in the range - 32¿ to -35¿. Phytoplankton ratios were in the range from - 23¿ to - 27¿. Most of the animals analyzed, both invertebrates (grazers and filter feeders) and vertebrates (fish), had 13C/12C ratios from - 15¿ to - 23¿ suggesting that these animals have kelp as their primary carbon source. The nudibranch Aplysia punctata had a 13C/12C ratio from -29 to - 33¿, and is an example of a species feeding on mostly red algae. The only group for which the isotopic ratio was close to that of phytoplankton was the amphipods. We interpret this as the result of a mixed diet of kelp and red algae rather than phytoplankton. This is supported by the fact that phytoplankton abundance is at a minimum, in early autum, when the amphipods are most abundant.

  Phylogenetic relationships among 8 North Atlantic species of Ceramium were analyzed using RUBISCO spacer sequences and partial rDNA ITS sequences. For most of the species several geographical isolates were included in the analyses. The algae were grown in unialgal culture and the molecular data were supplemented by morphological comparisons and crossability tests. The following species were included: C. rubrum, C. «strictum» species complex, C. pallidum, C. shuttleworthianum, C. ciliatum, C. diaphanum, C. deslongchampsii and C. cimbricum. In addition Spyridia filamentosa was includes as an outgroup species. The C. «strictum» species complex from Scandinavia, the British Isles and western Atlantic coast comprises more than one distinct species. The two species with cortical spines, C. ciliatum and C. shuttleworthianum, are not closely related to each other.

  Caulacanthus ustulatus was originally described from Cádiz (SW Spain) as the only species of the genus in Europe. Specimens identified as C. ustulatus were recently recorded in Brittany, 600 km north of the known northern limit. The Pacific species C. okamurae has been placed in synonymy with C. ustulatus on the basis of morphological similarities. DNA sequences (RUBISCO spacer and rDNA ITS) revealed two distinct genetic types: (1) Isolates from China and Brittany and (2) Isolates from Gibraltar and Portugal (Albufeira). Minor differences in morphological features between isolates of the two groups are seen in unialgal culture. We conclude that Caulacanthus in Brittany represents a Pacific introduction and that C. ustulatus and C. okamurae should be retained as separate species.

  På global basis er marine makro alger blant de viktigste akva kulturprodukter med en samlet årsproduksjon på 14 millioner tonn, det meste i form av taredyrking i Kina. I stadig økende grad blir dyrking av makroalger integrert med akvakultur. Den økologiske begrunnelsen for å dyrke makroalger er først og fremst at disse algene effektivt binder næringssalter fra oppdrett av fi sk og muslinger, men selve algebiomassen kan også utnyttes til en rekke formål.

  De viktigste mekanismene bak introduksjoner av marine arter er menneskelig aktivitet, som skipsfart og akvakultur. Enkelte av de introduserte artene har tilsynelatende bedre vekstvilkår i sine nye omgivelser, og mange formerer og sprer seg raskt. Nå er en ny rødalge fra Stillehavet i rask spredning langs vestkysten av Europa. Det er sannsynlig at arten vil etablere seg i norsk farvann i nær fremtid.
