  • A chemical retrospective as the institute prepares for convergence research environments and the Life Sciences Building Dec. 17, 2025 12:46 PM

The Department of Chemistry made history in 1969 when Odd Hassel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Together with skilled colleagues he helped develop an electron-diffraction apparatus capable of imaging chemical structures. Since then, the department has nurtured many strong research groups. Now the institute is entering a new phase as it prepares to move into the Life Sciences Building.

  • Convergence Environment Receives 17 million in Funding to Address Societal Challenges in Health Nov. 7, 2025 11:14 AM

The funding is for research to develop new medications for bacterial infections and cancer. The purpose of convergence environments is to promote interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers at the Life Sciences Building and other researchers at the University of Oslo (UiO). One of eight such environments will be led by Professor Reidar Lund from the Department of Chemistry. The funding is for a period of four years.

The new Lifescience building

The planned building for chemistry, pharmacy, life sciences and laboratory medicine is to be completed in 2026. With its 97,000 m2, it will be Norway's largest university and hospital building.
