ESS & MAX IV: Cross Border Science and Society
With the goal of taking the best advantage of existing expertise and strengthen collaborations, 8 universities in the Øresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak region, including UiO, have teamed up with ESS and MAXIV, to create a regional network for neutron and synchrotron scattering.
In order to take the best use of the two unique installations for synchrotron and neutron scattering, MAXIV and the European Spallation Source (ESS), it is critical that the universities of the Øresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak (ÖKS) region take a leading role in the education and training of future users. With the goal of taking the best advantage of existing expertise and strengthen collaborations, a regional network for neutron and synchrotron scattering has been created.
The network project has been awarded 9.5 million euro from the ÖKS Interreg EU program, to develop expertise within neutron/X-ray scattering in close synergy with the scientific communities at the different universities. The main goal will be to train young investigators to take full advantage of ESS and MAXIV in the future and to create a strong, local user community in the ÖKS-region.
Activities and Calls for experiments/projects
The granted InterReg project will support the following:
- Short projects/experiments/stays (6 months) with approx. 50% co-funding from the individual research groups.
- Workshops and conferences
- Summer/winter schools

Two new centres for synchrotron and neutron scattering
Two major centers for synchrotron and neutron scattering, MAXIV and the European Spallation Source (ESS) are under construction in Lund in Sweden. These two world-leading sources are planned to go into operation in 2016 and 2023, respectively.
