The role of pore fluid pressure for brittle failure in the crust: insights from observations and modelling
Kreeringssammendrag

Multi-Scale Fault Zone Characterization in Sedimentary Rocks: Bridging Outcrop Studies and AI-Driven Seismic Interpretation
Characterizing the deformation domains within a fault zone or the overall fault zone architecture is critical in understanding failure processes in rocks. This has significant implications for predicting earthquakes, exploration of natural resources, and managing long-term subsurface storage of nuclear waste and CO2.
Exhumed and subsurface fault zones serve as natural laboratories to investigate the complex geological processes associated with faulting. Insights from such investigations can also contribute in improving subsurface modelling workflows. Abhisek Basa’s PhD thesis adopts a holistic approach to examine active and fossil fault zones across various sedimentary rocks at multiple scales.
The doctoral work incorporates a wide range of methodologies including outcrop studies, as well as application of Deep Learning algorithms to ensure a completely data-driven workflow - free from human bias in subsurface fault characterization from reflection seismic data. It highlights the important roles played by (i) the depositional environment of host rocks and the resulting host rock heterogeneity, (ii) the interaction of fault sets of varying orientations at multiple scales in influencing the fault zone architecture and the overall faulting processes. It demonstrates that integrating surface and AI-driven subsurface investigations of fault zones can significantly advance our knowledge of failure mechanisms linked to faulting.
