Torsdag 30 oktober, 10:15-11:00, Aud 3, ZEB-bygningen:

The role of the subsurface in delivering on the energy transition

Kreeringssammendrag

CO2-lagring under havbunnen fordrer trygge geologiske lokasjoner for lagring.

CO2 Storage in the Horda Platform - Fault Analysis and Integrity Assessments

Nora Holden’s PhD research provides a detailed analysis of the structures in the Horda Platform of the North Sea and their predicted impact on carbon dioxide (CO2) migration in the Smeaheia and Aurora licenses. By integrating subsurface data, including 3D seismic and well logs, the study explores how these structures may seal or allow CO2 migration across faults.

The doctoral work by Holden highlights i) structural traps that may enhance storage capacity, ii) mapping fault seal uncertainties to improve risk management, iii) the impact of time-to-depth conversion on measurements of fault geometries and fault-risk assessments, and iv) the need for tailored approaches for optimal fault seal evaluations in complex fault zones.

These findings are essential for reducing structural risk and optimising CO2 storage efforts in the Horda Platform. They can also provide broader applications for other structurally defined CO2 storage sites and offers effective methods for identifying and addressing uncertainties related to faults in potential storage locations.

This PhD is part of the Norwegian Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre (NCCS), which aims to accelerate the deployment of CCS through industry-driven, science-based innovation.
