Developing engaging assessment in STEM education

Kreeringssammendrag

Exploring the features and impact of student-staff partnerships in learning and teaching

A partnership approach to teaching can enable teachers and students to learn from and develop with each other on equal terms, though perhaps in different ways, by removing the hierarchies that separate them. In his doctoral work Gerald Leo Decelles Ill explores our understandings of the experiences of students and staff engaged in partnership. Initial observations of the impact of compensation for partnership on motivation as well as an early understanding of partnership’s potential impact on assessment anxiety were also investigated. This evidence-based experiences is valuable in the context of teaching and learning strategies in the changing higher education landscape, especially as viewed against the backdrop of current societal crises.

Through questionnaires and interviews with participants of partnerships the doctoral work by Decelles Ill builds an understanding of partnership experiences in different contexts. Much of what we do in higher education is related to what the teacher can do, but with partnership this is shifted more to what teachers and students can do together. If we want students to be active in their learning, then they also need to know what is possible for them to do and experience in the classroom.
