Recently, the petroleum industry has focused on deeply buried reservoir discoveries and exploring potential CO2 storage sites close to existing infrastructure to increase the life span of already operating installations to save time and cost. It is therefore essential for the petroleum industry to find an innovative approach that exploits the existing core- and well log data to be successful in their endeavor of effectively characterizing and predicting reservoir quality. Continuous data sources (e.g. wireline logs) have a huge potential compared with expensive, time inefficient and sporadic data from cores in determining reservoir quality for use in a regional context. However, whereas core analysis offers in-depth knowledge about rock properties and diagenetic processes, continuous data sources can be difficult to interpret without a formation-specific framework. Here, we demonstrated how the pre-existing core data could be effectively used by integrating petrographic- and facies data with a pure predictive machine learning (ML) based porosity predictor. The inclusion of detailed core analysis is important for determining which reservoir parameter(s) that should be modeled and for the interpretation of model outputs. By applying this methodology, a framework for deducing lithological and diagenetic attributes can be established to aid reservoir quality delineation from wireline logs that can be used in frontier areas. With the ML porosity model, a Random Forest Regressor, the square of the correlation was 0.84 between predicted- and helium porosity test data over a large dataset consisting of 38 wells within the Stø Formation across the SW Barents Sea. By integrating the continuous ML porosity logs and core data, it was possible to differentiate three distinct bed types on wireline log responses within the Stø Formation. Particularly, the relationship between Gamma ray (GR) and porosity was effective in separating high porosity clean sand-, low porosity cemented clean sand and more clay and silt rich intervals. Additionally, in the P-wave velocity (VP) - density domain, separation of high porosity clean sand- and heavily cemented low porosity clean sand intervals were possible. The results also show that the ML derived porosity curves coincide with previously published and independent facies data from a selection of the wells included in the study. This demonstrates the applicability of the model in the region, because the Stø Formation has been described to exhibit similar lithological- and mineralogical properties over large parts of the Western Barents Sea area. Even though, continuous porosity data could be estimated from other sources like VP, neutron or density logs, this would generally require matrix and fluid information. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of the ML model in generating continuous porosity logs that are useful for characterizing and predicting reservoir properties in new wells. This methodology offers a workflow for exploiting already acquired core and well log data for frontier exploration that can be adapted to other formations and exploration scenarios worldwide.

Chlorite-coats on quartz surfaces are ubiquitous in various sedimentary environments. Chlorite-coats shield the surface of quartz from quartz cement overgrowths, thus preserving anomalously high porosity in deeply buried sandstone reservoirs. The inhibition of the quartz cement implies that the chlorite-coats on the surface of quartz grains can significantly influence the physicochemical behavior of the quartz grains. Therefore, failure to notice the initial thin microscale coatings forming during deposition can have serious consequences for modeling several geochemical reactions occurring at liquid-solid interfaces. Despite this huge implication, the fundamental mechanisms involved in chlorite-coat formation is not well understood. Here we present an experimental study to determine the parameters that control chlorite-coat formation on the surface of quartz grains. The batch experiments were conducted in a concoction of quartz and chlorite under different conditions of ionic strength, pH, and presence of humic acid (HA), iron- (Fe) and aluminum (Al) oxides). HA, Fe- and Al oxides are suggested to aid the emplacement of chlorite-coat precursors. At pH 7, the quartz–chlorite and quartz–chlorite–Fe/Al-oxides mixing experiments performed in saline and non-saline solution result in equal chlorite-coat coverages, suggesting neither salinity nor Fe and Al-oxides explain the mechanisms of chlorite-coat formation. At pH 5 and 9, however the chlorite-coat coverage was superior only in saline solution, indicating differences in coat coverage may be caused by variable electrokinetic charge distribution due to the distribution and transport of dissolved salt. The chlorite-coat barely formed in experiments that contain HA in quartz–chlorite mixtures regardless of ionic strength and pH. Against a long-standing notion, the presence of organic matter cannot necessarily be prerequisites for binding chlorite on the surface of quartz grains. The dynamic interactions between solution chemistry and surface chemistry of solid phases (quartz, chlorite, HA, Fe and Al oxides) can result in changing the electrokinetic properties in a region near the solid phases and at mineral-solution interfaces. We therefore propose that the electrokinetic response that arises in heterogeneous systems may explain the mechanisms of chlorite-coat formation.

Authigenic quartz grains carry information that is diagnostic for the thermal history and thereby the burial depth and uplift of sediments. Recycled quartz grains with embayed or rounded authigenic remnants have been observed globally, but the value of these grains in unravelling past tectonism is presently underexplored. In this study, we launch a new method to demonstrate that cathodoluminescence (CL) in combination with fluid inclusion data and textural characteristics of authigenic quartz can provide important information about past tectonic activity. Vital in the method is the realisation that recycled quartz grains can be distinguished from other quartz grains by their geochemical CL fingerprint, allowing tracking of uplifted source terrains in a direction towards higher fractions of the recycled grains. Furthermore, regional mapping can reveal both intra-basinal recycling as well as recycled grains transported into the basin from external sources. The new proposed method is simple and does not require more than a standard Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with a CL detector, available at many geoscientific institutions worldwide. This innovative approach applies to a wide section of geoscientific disciplines, and complement and supplement other conventional methods used for unravelling past tectonism.

Sedimentary recycling has the potential to obscure source-to-sink relationships, provenance interpretations, burial history reconstructions and robust reservoir quality predictions in siliciclastic sedimentary basins. Here, we integrate petrographic and cathodoluminescence microtextures with fluid inclusion thermometry in quartz overgrowths to identify sedimentary recycling and to constrain the potential provenance candidate for recycled grains in Lower Mesozoic sandstone of the western Barents Sea basin. Four diagenetic imprints were recognized as proof of sediment recycling: (a) microtextural surface properties of overgrowths, (b) the presence of overgrowths at sutured grain contacts, (c) reversed diagenetic sequences and (d) fluid inclusions within quartz overgrowths. The diagenetic imprints confirm delivery of recycled sediments across the western Barents Sea basin. Their widespread distribution across the basin suggest that the recycled grains were derived from a drainage basin with regional-scale sediment dispersal potential during the latest Triassic. Furthermore, the drainage basin must have contained sedimentary rocks. Prior to surface exposure, the precursor sedimentary basin was subjected to burial temperatures exceeding 130°C, whereby syntaxial quartz overgrowths precipitated. This temperature indicates an uplift of around 3–4 km, which represents a significant tectonic event. Recycled quartz grains can provide insights on their provenance as they retain direct temperature records. The geothermal signatures and geographically widespread distribution of recycled quartz exclude spatially restricted intrabasinal highs and higher-temperature crystalline rocks as provenance candidates for the recycled grain portion. Our data support the contemporaneous Novaya Zemlya Fold and Thrust Belt as the most likely provenance candidate in the region. The integrated approach demonstrated herein can be used to constrain sediment recycling and partly eroded provenance candidates in sedimentary basins of equivalent setting worldwide, particularly in quartz-rich strata susceptible to sediment supply from older uplifted sedimentary basins.

Sedimentary basins containing igneous intrusions within sedimentary reservoir units represent an important risk in petroleum exploration. The Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic sediments at Wilhelmøya (Svalbard) contains reservoir heterogeneity as a result of sill emplacement and represent a unique case study to better understand the effect of magmatic intrusions on the general burial diagenesis of siliciclastic sediments. Sills develop contact metamorphic aureoles by conduction as presented in many earlier studies. However, there is significant impact of localized hydrothermal circulation systems affecting reservoir sediments at considerable distance from the sill intrusions. Dolerite sill intrusions in the studied area are of limited vertical extent (∼12 m thick), but created localized hydrothermal convection cells affecting sediments at considerable distance (more than five times the thickness of the sill) from the intrusions. We present evidence that the sedimentary sequence can be divided into two units: (1) the bulk poorly lithified sediment with a maximum burial temperature much lower than 60–70 °C, and (2) thinner intervals outside the contact zone that have experienced hydrothermal temperatures (around 140 °C). The main diagenetic alteration associated with normal burial diagenesis is minor mechanical plastic deformation of ductile grains such as mica. Mineral grain contacts show no evidence of pressure dissolution and the vitrinite reflectance suggests a maximum temperature of ∼40 °C. Contrary to this, part of the sediment, preferentially along calcite cemented flow baffles, show evidence of hydrothermal alteration. These hydrothermally altered sediment sections are characterized by recrystallized carbonate cemented intervals. Further, the hydrothermal solutions have resulted in localized sericitization (illitization) of feldspars, albitization of both K-feldspar and plagioclase and the formation of fibrous illite nucleated on kaolinite. These observations suggest hydrothermal alteration at T > 120–140 °C at distances considerably further away than expected from sill heat dissipation by conduction only, which commonly affect sediments about twice the thickness of the sill intrusion. We propose that carbonate-cemented sections acted as flow baffles already during the hydrothermal fluid mobility and controlled the migration pathways of the buoyant hot fluids. Significant hydrothermally induced diagenetic alterations affecting the porosity and hence reservoir quality was not noted in the noncarbonate-cemented reservoir intervals.

This study has investigated rock physics characteristics and geomechanical properties of Middle Miocene mudstones in the Norwegian North Sea as the primary caprock for the Skade CO2 storage reservoir. To evaluate the seal properties, we analyzed collected drill cuttings and measured well logs from well 16/4-1, in addition to an extensive well log database in the Northern North Sea. The studied caprock was identified as siliceous ooze-rich mudstones with low bulk density, high shear wave velocity, and low Vp/Vs ratio. The abundance of siliceous skeletal material resulted in a significant shift from the overall trend of mudstones within the Hordaland Group. The estimated scenarios for S-wave velocity depicted that the ooze-rich mudstones have the highest brittleness of the Hordaland Group semiconsolidated rocks. The more brittle ooze-rich mudstones also indicated the lowest estimation of fracture pressure compared to other scenarios. The research outcomes emphasize the influence of mudstone type and presence of siliceous skeletal material on the macroscale physical properties of shallow semi-compacted mudstones.

The brittleness indices in well 16/4-1 illustrated that the mineralogical composition-based indices significantly overestimate brittleness compared to the elastic-based indices. While the caprock for Skade CO2 storage reservoir showed an overall ductility, the bottom 30 m demonstrated an increased brittleness profile. The more brittle ooze-rich mudstones also indicated the lowest estimation of fracture pressure compared to other scenarios. The research outcomes emphasize on the influence of mudstone type and microstructure on the macroscale physical properties of shallow semi-compacted CO2 caprocks.

Sediment transport and upland linkages in an enormous intracratonic Basin - Insights from cross-disciplinary source-to-sink studies in the Triassic Greater Barents Sea Basin.

The Greater Barents Sea Basin (Svalbard, the Russian and Norwegian Barents Sea, the Kara Sea and Franz Josef Land) was about five times the size of the North Sea and filled with enormous amounts of sediments in the Triassic. This is one of the most well-studied and data-rich basins in the world, ancient geomorphology (fluvial channels, clinoforms) is well-imaged in 3D seismic data, and a high-resolution palynostratigraphic framework gives excellent correlations and time-control. This makes the area an excellent place to study sediment transport and develop models for sediment provenance. Most existing studies have however studied only parts of this basin, but in the ongoing ISBAR project, we study the entire basin using an integrated stratigraphic framework and diverse techniques such as seismic interpretation, fluvial geomorphology, detrital zircon dating, sediment mass balance, palynology and petrology.
In this presentation, we give an overview of the recent advances made in understanding the Greater Barents Sea Basin and summarize our latest research. These results include variations in amount of sediment supplied to the basin throughout the Triassic, the degree and timing of onset of sediment recycling in the basin, the petrographic and detrital zircon-age signatures of the different sediment sources, and the evolution of petrographic- and detrital zircon-age signatures through time. These variations are discussed in terms of source-area evolution, and they indicate that sediment supply was strongly variable and controlled to geodynamic events in the Urals and West Siberia. Sediment supply from minor, marginal sources (Fennoscandia, Loppa High, Greenland) appears to have varied less through time. Our results also indicate significant bypass of sediment to adjacent arctic basins in the Late Triassic. Upcoming research in the project related to autogenic controls on detrital zircon age spectra, and thermochronology and basin modelling in the Barents Sea, will also be presented.

This work presents a study on the interrelationship of burial diagenesis, depositional facies, the origin and distribution of diagenetic clay minerals, and diagenesis in sediment–sill sequences, as well as the thermal history evolution and their effect on reservoir quality distribution of the Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic sequences on Svalbard. The study unequivocally demonstrates that there is systematic variability of diagenetic signatures as a function of depositional facies. Chlorite coating that inhibits porosity-occluding quartz cement is facies controlled. Sorting, grain size distribution and the clay fraction percentage exert a stronger control on the modes of occurrence of chlorite than on its abundance. This suggests that the best reservoir quality in a deltaic setting can be predicted with knowledge on the distribution of diagenetic signatures, specific depositional facies and sediment composition. Sedimentary basins containing igneous intrusions within sedimentary reservoir units represent an important degree of uncertainty in petroleum exploration. The intrusions obscure the normal burial diagenesis and thermal history of the basin. A new approach is employed in this study, coupling organic with inorganic paleotemperature proxies. The thermal history of a basin can then be accurately constrained. The method works well also in the important task of discriminating between sill-induced diagenesis and burial diagenesis. The findings of this study can be applicable for understanding and predicting reservoir quality distribution of the exploration target potential petroleum reservoir rocks in the subsurface.
