Faglige interesser

Jeg har lenge vært interessert i dyr med ekstreme egenskaper. I min forskningsgruppe har vi særlig undersøkt adapsjoner til et variabelt oksygennivå i hjerne, hjerte og pusteorganer hos forskjellige vertebrater, blant annet karuss og noen ferskvannsskilpadder. Dette er dyr som kan overleve uten oksygen i flere måneder. Forekomsten av slike arter viser klart at evolusjonen løste problemet å leve uten oksygen for flere millioner år siden - noe som medisinsk forskning har prøvd å oppnå i løpet av de siste tiårene, med svært begrenset suksess.

Min gruppe undersøker også virkningene av økt CO2-nivå og temperatur på fysiologien til marin fisk, fra korallrevfisk til laks, og prøver å finne ut hvordan disse vil håndtere den forventede økningen av temperatur og surhet i havet. 

Endelig har vi lenge undersøkt koblingen mellom adferd og fysiologi i fisk og har funnet at monoaminerge nevrotransmittorer i hjernen, særlig serotonin og dopamin, er nøye knyttet til stress og aggresjon hos fisk under sosiale interaksjoner. Vårt fokus er nå rettet mot nevrogenesens (dannelsen av nye hjerneceller) rolle ved stressreaksjoner hos fisk og hvordan nevrogenesen kontrolleres.

Bakgrunn

Jeg fullførte min PhD i zoofysiologi ved Uppsala Universitet i 1988. Etter en periode som postdoc ved Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami (1989-90) ble jeg ansatt som amanuensis ved Uppsala Universitet (1991-96). Siden 1996 har jeg vært ansatt som professor ved UiO, først ved Biologisk institutt og så ved IMBV. Jeg hadde et forskningsopphold ved University of Queensland i 2001-2 og har utført feltarbeid i Norge, Sverige, Queensland og Namibia.
