Faglige interesser

Forskningen i min gruppe er rettet mot to emner som er av betydning for utvikling og differensiering av flercellede organismer: epigenetikk og celle-celle-kommunikasjon. Vi benytter modellorganismen Arabidopsis thaliana.

Genreguleringen styres av transkripsjonsfaktorer, men også av kromatinstruktur. Min gruppe er interessert i proteinene som "skriver" og "avleser" histonkoden og som deltar i remodellering av kromatin. Vi har påvist histonmetyltransferaser (SET-domeneproteiner) og metyl-CpG-bindende domene (MBD)-proteiner i Arabidopsis, og også nye ko-domener. Vårt mål er å finne den biologiske funksjonen til utvalgte SET-domene- og MBD-proteiner.

Et viktig system for kommunikasjon mellom naboceller er utskillelse av ligander som bindes til membranbundne reseptorer. Min gruppe har funnet et peptidligand-reseptorpar som kontrollerer avfellingen av blomsterorganer: den lille peptidliganden INFLORESCENCE DEFICIENT IN ABSCISSION (IDA), som interagerer med de reseptorlignende kinasene HEASA og HEASA-LIKE 2. Til nå har bare få slike ligand-reseptor-signalmoduler blitt identifisert, selv om det finnes flere hundre gener i Arabidopsis som koder for reseptorlignende kinaser og sannsynlige utskilte ligander. Målet til min gruppe er å finne andre ligand-reseptorpar som deltar i andre prosesser som omfatter celleseparasjon og utvikling.

Bakgrunn

Min utdanning ble tatt ved Universitetet i Oslo. Etter å ha fullført en phd-grad i bakteriegenetikk skiftet jeg tema til plantevitenskap. Jeg arbeidet som forsker ved Laboratorium for planters molekylærbiologi, Landbrukshøyskolen, med fokus på identifisering av vevsspesifikke transkripter som uttrykkes i byggkorn. Jeg har hatt forskningsopphold ved Max-Planck-Institut für Züchtungs-forschung, Köln, Tyskland, og Center for Plant Molecular Biology, ZMBP, Universitetet i Tübingen. Jeg ble professor ved Biologisk institutt, Avdeling for generell genetikk ved Universitetet i Oslo i 1998 og er nå ansatt ved Institutt for molekylær biovitenskap. Min gruppe er medlem av Konsortium for genregulering og epigenetikk (Gene Regulation and Epigenetics Consortium (GREC)), et forskningsinitiativ som prioriteres av Matematisk-naturvitenskapelig fakultet.
