  1H-MAS NMR is shown to be a powerful and attractive technique for quantifying the comonomer content in ethene--alkene copolymers, as exemplified by a series of ethene--hexene copolymers. The main advantages of applying 1H-MAS solid-state NMR are related to; a) the very short experimental sampling time, on the order of a few minutes b) the bypass of sample preparation, as compared to traditional high-resolution liquid-state 13C-NMR which necessitates a high temperature (1300C) preparation period of days, or even weeks, c) no thermal sample treatment and d) no need for calibration. In particular, it will be shown that the technique allows the comonomer content of cross-linked LDPE to be probed, which is generally difficult, or impossible, by solution-state NMR since these polymers are mostly non-soluble.

  Films grown on amorphous Ni78Si8B14 alloy and on polycrystalline Ni by polarization in 1 M KOH solution were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). XPS investigations showed that the films formed on both the amorphous Ni78Si8B14 alloy and polycrystalline Ni at open-circuit potential and after polarization at 0.4 V-RHE consist of Ni(OH)(2), while the films formed after polarization at 0.5 V-RHE consist of NiOOH. No traces of B or Si in the uppermost of the hydroxide films produced on the amorphous Ni78Si8B14 alloy were found. STS showed that all films formed on the amorphous Ni78Si8B14 had more n-type semiconductor character than those formed on polycrystalline Ni. Electrochemical investigations indicated that the amorphous Ni78Si8B14 alloy is a better electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction than polycrystalline Ni. We discuss whether this can be attributed to an enhanced electron density on the Ni sites in the alloy leading to an increase in the tunneling probability of the electrons on the surface film. This can subsequently enhance its catalytic action towards the oxygen evolution reaction. (c) 2007 The Electrochemical Society.

  Indium-tin-oxide(ITO)antireflection coatings were deposited on crystalline Si(c-Si), amorphoushydrogenatedSi(a-Si:H)and glass substrates at room temperature(RT), 160 °C and 230 °C by magnetron sputtering. The films were characterised using atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, combined with resistance and transmittance measurements. The conductivity and refractive index as well as the morphology of the ITO films showed a significant dependence on the processing conditions. The films deposited on the two different Si substrates at higher temperatures have rougher surfaces compared to the RT ones due to the development of crystallinity and growth of columnar grains.

  Amorphous films of Ni-B, Ni-P and Ni-S were produced by electrodeposition on pure polycrystalline Ni. The films were studied with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Changes in the Auger parameter (AP), peak energy shifts and changes in the Ni 2p shake up satellite intensity and energy were used to probe the electronic changes occurring upon alloying Ni with P, S and B. It is suggested that the Ni sites experience a higher electron density in the alloys than in the pure element and this could be the reason for the increased catalytic activity.   We report the photoluminescence (PL) from an (Er, Ge) co-doped SiO2 film deposited by rf-magnetron sputtering in an Ar + O2 ambience. The sample film was annealed in N2 for 30 min at different temperatures. The PL intensity increases as the annealing temperature increases from 700 to 1000°C, and drops to very weak after 1100°C annealing. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation shows that there are some Ge-rich nanoparticles precipitated after 700°C annealing, and more clusters precipitated after 1000°C annealing. However, no Ge nanocrystals were found in these films, the diffraction patterns are always halo which indicates that the precipitated clusters are in amorphous states. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicates the Ge in the nanoclusters is mostly in an oxidized state and the oxidation state of Er increases with increasing annealing temperature.

  Abstract Solid state 1H-MAS NMR is shown to be an attractive experimental technique for determining the comonomer content in ethene-alfa-alkene copolymers. Its advantage is associated with: a) no particular need for sample preparation, b) non-destructive, c) short overall acquisition time of the order of a few minutes. d) no need for calibration and finally e) the copolymer content in cross-linked LDPE may be determined, which is otherwise not easily accessible, as these samples are non-soluble in most liquids.   Abstract The Oseberg find contains a large proportion of hardwoods that had been treated about 100 years ago with hot solutions of alum salts (potassium aluminum sulfate dodecahydrate, KAl(SO4)2 . 12H2O). Today, the wood is characterized by a high acidity (pH 1) and is structurally highly degraded. The observed deterioration is also active. The ‘alum treatment’ was a method of choice for the conservation of highly deteriorated waterlogged archaeological wood found from 1850 – 1950 and has since been replaced by treatment with polyethylene glycols (PEG). The alum treatment has been mainly used in Scandinavia but also in the USA, Japan and other European countries. Attempts to chemically characterize the alum-treated wood from the Oseberg find is one phase in the research currently being undertaken at the Museum of Cultural History as a part of the Alum Research Project. The ultimate aim of this project is to design conservation re-treatments which will stabilize and strengthen the wood. So far, we have focussed on non-destructive analytical techniques using ATR-FTIR and solid state NMR. Further chemical analyses are planned, using destructive techniques. Analyses using infrared spectroscopy and solid state 1H and 13C NMR were undertaken on selected alum-treated samples and compared with fresh woods as well as archaeological woods from the same find not treated with alum. The advantages of these analytical techniques lie in the fact that sample preparation is minimal prior to measurement – highly deteriorated wood can be greatly modified by standard sample preparation procedures. These techniques, when used together, give an acceptable level of qualitative structural information regarding the state of the remaining polymers. Analytical results demonstrated that all alum-treated samples are highly degraded relative to archaeological wood from the same find not treated with alum salts. The non-alum-treated archaeological wood has carbohydrates left, which are highly reduced in the alum-treated wood. 13C NMR can distinguish different lignin types, and has shown that syringyl lignin is more deteriorated than guaiacyl lignin in the most deteriorated alum-treated samples. NMR and FTIR-ATR results also show that remaining polymers in the alum-treated wood, dominated by lignins, are highly oxidized and contain carboxylic groups. This shows that the alum-treatment has caused extensive chemical changes in the wood, resulting in wood with a powdery consistency with almost no structural integrity relative to samples from Oseberg not treated with alum.

  Some amorphous metals are reported to be more active electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evoution than the same crystalline metals. The catalytic activity of hydrogen evolution in alkaline solution has been shown to correlate with the crystalline size in electrodeposited NiPx and NiBx alloys. The aim of this work is to study the electronic properties of amorphous/nanocrystalline surfaces in Ni78Si8B14 before and after crystallization. Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy is one of the most powerful spectroscopic techniques for studying a variety of surface electronic properties at atomic scale resolution.
