For 2022, the Else-Ragnhild Neumann Award for Women in Geosciences had one award winner, who is Jessica Ann McBeck.
McBeck was presented the award by CEEDs Director Trond Helge Torsvik at a CEED-symposium and conference, Oslo-Copenhagen, 7.12.2022. The award consists of a diploma and an honorarium of 50.000 NOK.
Outstanding early career scientist
The award committee concluded that Jessica McBeck’s scientific work deserves recognition because of her original work combining numerical modelling, laboratory experiments and utilisation of field data to get better forecasting of earthquakes.
Dr. Jessica McBeck, who is a researcher at the Njord Centre, Departments of Physics and Geosciences, at the University of Oslo, studies fracture network coalescence and strain localization in both experiments and numerical models. The long-term goal of her work is to identify the evolving characteristics of fracture networks and strain fields that may help forecast the timing of the next large earthquake.
