Om prosjektet

VIKINGS er et tverrfaglig prosjekt som tar sikte på å forstå rollen vulkanutbrudd og klimaendringer spilte i utformingen av den tidlige historien til Skandinavia. Perioden 500-1250 var preget av samfunnsomveltninger, befolkningsekspansjon, nye kongedømmer - og store vulkanutbrudd påvist gjennom geokjemiske markører i iskjerner og andre sedimentære arkiver. Klimavariasjonene i Europa, og spesielt i Skandinavia i perioden, er imidlertid dårlig forstått selv innenfor en århundrelang tidsskala. Dessuten har tilgjengelige dateringer av arkeologiske funn fra tidsperioden sjelden blitt tolket innenfor rammer av klimatiske og miljømessige endringer.

Med VIKINGS-prosjektet vil vi forstå detaljene i den klimatiske utviklingen i denne viktige tidsperioden og undersøke de samfunnsmessige konsekvensene av kraftige vulkanutbrudd.

Finansiering

Det engelske navnet på prosjektet er Volcanic Eruptions and their Impacts on Climate, Environment, and Viking Society in 500–1250 CE (VIKINGS). Prosjektet er finansiert i kategorien Ground-breaking research (FRIPRO) av Norges forskningsråd (NFR), med NFR prosjektnummer 275191.

VIKINGS-prosjektet startet opp i 2018 og har varighet ut 2023.
