Mud volcanism is a widespread geological phenomenon characterized by spectacular mud flow deposits extending for kilometers. However, only a few eruptive events have been reported to be long-lasting and voluminous enough to create such extensive flows. We report findings from a multidisciplinary investigation conducted after three eruptions occurring since August 2022 at the Lokbatan mud volcano in Azerbaijan. During these three short-lived events, only a moderate volume of mud breccia was expelled around the crater site. However, field observations show that these events promoted the downslope motion of the >1-km-long older mud flow. Electrical tomography reveals a conductive unit at ∼25 m depth below the volcano, which lubricates the detachment upon which sediments slide. Cross-checking legacy satellite imagery (from 2009) combined with InSAR data (from 2014) reveals that this type of movement was already occurring as early as 2009, indicating a long-lasting process. Our findings suggest that kilometer-sized mud flows observed at other mud volcanoes may not stem from single, voluminous eruptions, as previously thought, but from gradual sliding processes initiated by new loads of erupted material. This mechanism is essential for understanding the dynamics of mud volcanoes on Earth.

Azerbaijan hosts the world's highest concentration of mud volcanoes (MVs) on Earth, including some of the largest edifices that produce kilometre-scale mud breccia flows. Traditionally, such flows have been attributed to major eruptive events; however, recent study suggests that many of these flows form through prolonged creeping processes, analogous to warm-based glacier motion. To assess the prevalence and characteristics of this phenomenon, we analysed historical satellite imagery from Google Earth for several dozen mud volcanoes across the Caspian Basin, complemented by field observations at selected sites. Our analysis reveals that 19 mud volcanoes exhibit measurable creeping surface displacement of preexisting mud flows, with rates ranging from a few metres to tens of metres per decade. While some volcanoes, such as Goturdag, display continuous deformation across entire flow lengths, most of them exhibit only episodic motion in connection to mud volcano eruptions. While most creeping flows occur outside inhabited areas, landforms such as Bozdaq Gobu represent a potential hazard to settlements and infrastructure. These findings highlight the importance of post-eruptive creep in mud volcano evolution and emphasise the need for ongoing monitoring and hazard awareness.

Assessing how permafrost controls subsurface gas transfer is difficult in polar deserts, where direct observations of thaw state and permeability are logistically limited. Here we test whether paired soil-gas measurements of radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) can be used to distinguish shallow active-layer production from deeper advective gas transport in Taylor Valley, Antarctica. We carried out a systematic grid survey at 149 sites during two austral summers (2019/20 and 2023) and combined field measurements with laboratory determinations of radionuclide content and radon/thoron exhalation from active-layer sediments. The two isotopes behaved differently. 220Rn, which decays very rapidly, was consistent with a dominantly shallow source, although field values were systematically lowered by sampling dilution. By contrast, 222Rn did not scale with shallow production alone, and the highest field concentrations exceeded the locally constrained equilibrium range expected from the active layer. This indicates an additional transport component, most plausibly linked to upward gas migration from below the active layer. The strongest 222Rn anomalies were more widespread in 2019/20 compared with the colder 2023 campaign, suggesting that short-term meteorological conditions can modulate subsurface connectivity and gas transport efficiency. These results show that radon isotopes provide a practical framework for identifying shallow versus deeper gas pathways and for monitoring climate-sensitive changes in Antarctic permafrost systems.

This study presents the first documentation and analysis of polymetallic Fe–Mn seafloor nodules from offshore Northeast Greenland. Samples were collected from three sites by dredging and gravity coring along the slopes of both the outer and transform margin highs. The morphology, petrography, and whole-rock geochemistry of twenty-four nodules were determined. 10Be/9Be and (U–Th)/He dating were undertaken for representative samples to constrain the time of formation. Two nodule groups were identified in all studied sampling sites. Group 1 (n = 19) are light banded, primarily hydrogenetic nodules with notable enrichments in Mn and Fe, as well as several trace elements including rare earth elements (REE), V, Co, and Y. They have geochemical and textural similarities to Fe–Mn deposits from the Arctic Basin. 10Be/9Be age estimates suggest that growth initiated around 13,5 Ma, shortly after the opening of the Fram Strait, which influence deep-water circulation and inflow of nutrient-rich Arctic waters onto the NE Greenland shelf. Group 2 nodules (n = 5) are dense with high Fe (up to 64 wt% Fe2O3), low Mn content and little to no enrichment in trace elements and REEs. They are interpreted as hydrothermal in origin, with preliminary (U–Th)/He ages suggesting Quaternary formation under weak, diffuse fluid circulation in near-bottom environments of uncertain source. This study expands our understanding of seafloor mineralization in the Arctic–North Atlantic gateway, revealing that on the NE Greenland shelf this process reflects a long-term interplay between tectonic evolution, ocean circulation, and fluid-driven alteration.

In the Arctic, substantial amounts of methane are stored in marine sediments. Yet, the distribution and stability of methane reservoirs is poorly understood, especially offshore Greenland. As Arctic warming accelerates, understanding natural methane seepage is crucial for assessing its role in the carbon cycle and climate impact. Here, we present a unique interdisciplinary geoscientific data set that spans the ice-covered Northeast Greenland shelf and captures entire fluid flow systems from source to sink. Our data documents widespread natural seepage of oil and gas from the seafloor through the water column, locally reaching the sea surface. The released hydrocarbons are sourced from deep petroleum systems and primarily migrate along permeable beds towards the seafloor. Glacial erosion during the Quaternary has effectively removed the sealing units, creating geologic windows that allow widespread natural seepage. Our first-order estimates suggest that minimum 677–1460 Mt of thermogenic gas ( ~ 0.5–1.1 Gt of carbon) has been released into the ocean since grounded ice retreated from the shelf around ~15 ka BP. These findings provide new insight into the impact of active natural seepage in a rapidly changing climate and have substantial implications for the Arctic Ocean’s carbon cycle and marine ecosystems.

Natural hydrocarbon seepages constitute a substantial influx of oil and gas into hydrosphere and atmosphere, impacting the environment and greenhouse gas budgets. The Lusi seepage system (Indonesia) is one of the Earth’s largest surface hydrocarbon manifestations, and is intrinsically associated with the interaction of organic-rich sedimentary rocks and recent magmatism. Previous ground-based and satellite measurements revealed that Lusi is a mega emitter of thermogenic methane, releasing ~0.1 Mt methane per year. Here, linking the quantification of mud flow rates with oil concentration data, we estimate that Lusi released ~0.22-0.28 Mt of oil over 13 years of continuous fluid discharge. This emission is of the same order of magnitude as the Deepwater Horizon spill. The oil discharge into the Porong River and Madura Strait poses an environmental threat to aquatic ecosystems of north-east Java. Combining flux and concentration data, we have also estimated a release into the atmosphere of ~8-10 kt of ethane and ~6-8 kt of propane per year. Over 18 years, Lusi has already injected into the atmosphere more than 20 times the amount of ethane released by the 2015 Aliso Canyon gas storage accident (California), considered as one of the largest gas leaks in U.S. history.

Lusi, the youngest sediment-hosted geothermal system on Earth, pierced the surface in May 2006 in the Kendeng Basin (East Java). To investigate the subsurface and the fluid migration pathways feeding this large eruptive center we processed a dataset of seismic ambient noise. We compared the intrinsic attenuation distribution and the S-wave velocity structure of a region of the Javanese back-arc basin against its shear wave velocity structure. Our study highlights that Lusi’s plumbing system features two distinct fluid flow regimes, one across the shallow sedimentary units and one developing sub-vertically across the deeper domains of the basin. We show that ambient noise and intrinsic attenuation tomographies are complementary tools that should be performed routinely when studying geothermal systems. For decades, this region has been considered a hydrocarbon province as shown by the dozens of wells extracting hydrocarbons form the reservoirs. However, we instead highlight that such a basin is rich in geothermal resources. In particular, we argue that since the hydrocarbon extraction is declining and the energy transition is becoming imperative, the available hydrocarbon facilities should instead be repurposed for the extraction of geothermal resources. The high geothermal gradient, the steep topography of the nearby volcanic arc driving fluid flow and the well-studied subsurface, make this portion of the Kendeng basin an excellent geothermal site. Furthermore, the abundant geothermal resources at depth could be harnessed by re-purposing the dozens of wells drilled in the depleted oil and gas fields. Future geothermal operators should capitalize on existing infrastructure and turn the Lusi natural disaster into a geothermal opportunity.

Borealis is a recently discovered submerged mud volcano in the Polar North Atlantic, differing from the numerous methane seepages previously identified in the region. Here we show in situ observations from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), capturing the release of warm (11.5 °C) Neogene sediments and methane-rich fluids from a gryphon at Borealis. The surrounding seafloor within the mud volcano features extensive carbonate deposits, indicating prolonged diffuse methane migration. Sampling and imagery reveal that Borealis supports unique habitats adapted to low-oxygen conditions near methane seeps. Additionally, the irregularly shaped carbonate structures serve as a natural shelter from bottom trawling and a substratum for sessile fauna and may function as nursery grounds for threatened fish species. This discovery underscores the ecological significance of cold seep ecosystems in the Polar North Atlantic, highlighting their role in biodiversity by serving as refuges for marine species and emphasizing the need for their conservation

Sedimentary volcanism is a widespread geological phenomenon on Earth. Similar processes are theorized to occur on extraterrestrial bodies like Mars, potentially representing surface expressions of subsurface liquid water reservoirs. As we are currently missing ground truth, recognizing signs of extraterrestrial mud volcanism is based on comparative analysis with terrestrial mudflows. Despite the ubiquitous presence of salts on planetary surfaces, it remains unclear how different dissolved salts in mud mixtures influence the behavior of erupted mud. Our study integrates laboratory experiments, thermodynamic calculations, and rheometry measurements to investigate how concentrations of NaCl, MgSO4, Na2SO4, and CaSO4 affect such behavior. The results show that 10 wt.% MgSO4 and only 2.5 wt.% NaCl maximizes mud propagation, producing ropy patterns and narrow flows, while higher salt concentrations result in sheet-like flows covering wider areas. When the mud is supersaturated in salt, the liquid state is prolonged but propagation is reduced. Hence, mud salinity has a significant influence on mud flow behavior in low-pressure environments, reflecting the balance between anti-freezing effects and viscosity-compositional effects. Our experimental results are limited to bentonite muds, yet the sensitivity to salt type/concentration is also expected for other muds, leading to a much broader range of morphology, longevity and spatial dispersion than previously assumed.

Imaging spectroscopy allows us to identify surface materials by analyzing the spectra resulting from the light–material interaction. In this preliminary study, we analyze a pair of hyperspectral cubes acquired by PRISMA (on 20 April 2021) and EO1- Hyperion (on 4 July 2015) over the Indonesian Lusi mud eruption. We show the potential suitability of using the two sensors for characterizing the mineralogical features in demanding “wet and muddy” environments such as Lusi. We use spectral library reflectance spectra like Illite Chlorite from the USGS spectral library, which are known to be associated with Lusi volcanic products, to identify minerals. In addition, we have measured the reflectance spectra and composition of Lusi sampled mud collected in November 2014. Finally, we compare them with reflectance spectra from EO1-Hyperion and PRISMA. The use of hyperspectral sensors at improved SNR, such as PRISMA, has shown the potential to determine the mineral composition of Lusi PRISMA data, which allowed the distinction of areas with different turbidities as well. Artifacts in the VNIR spectral region of the L2 PRISMA reflectance product were found, suggesting that future work needs to take into account an independent atmospheric correction rather than using the L2D PRISMA product.

Global warming has prompted globally widespread permafrost thawing, resulting in enhanced greenhouse gas release into the atmosphere. Studies conducted in the Northern Hemisphere reveal an alarming increase in permafrost thawing. However, similar data from Antarctica are scarce. We conducted a 2-D Deep Electrical Resistivity Tomography (DERT) survey in Taylor Valley, Antarctica, to image the distribution of permafrost, its thicknesses, lower boundaries, and hydrogeology. Results show resistive, discontinuous domains that we suggest represent permafrost units. We also find highly conductive layers (5–10 Ω·m), between 300–350 m and 600–650 m below ground level and a shallower (∼50–100 m depth) conductive layer. The combined data set reveals a broad brine system in Taylor Valley, implying multi-tiered groundwater circulation: a shallow, localized system linked with surface water bodies and a separate deeper, regional circulation system. The arrangement of these brines across different levels, coupled with the uneven permafrost distribution, underscores potential interplay between the two systems.

Abstract Vesteris Seamount is a large Quaternary intraplate submarine volcano in the SW Greenland Sea, about 1,000 km NE of Iceland and 300 km NW of the Mohn's spreading ridge, whose mode of formation remains unsolved. We present geochemical data for new samples dredged from the Vesteris edifice, including major, trace elements and Sr‐Nd‐Pb‐Hf isotopes. The isotopic characteristics of the alkaline lavas, covering the basanite/tephrite to benmoreite range, indicate the involvement of depleted and enriched mantle components. The source is dominated by the depleted mantle (85%–90%) and a deep enriched component possibly supplied by the Iceland Plume (IP) (10%–15%). Additional source enrichment was due to recycled crust and sub‐continental lithospheric mantle, as suggested by Hf isotopes (0.283147 ± 0.000005) measured for the first time in Vesteris lavas and by a decoupling in Pb isotopes evidenced by relatively low‐radiogenic 207 Pb/ 204 Pb (15.510) and high‐radiogenic 208 Pb/ 204 Pb (38.554) with respect to the Northern Hemisphere Reference Line. We interpret the geochemical results using existing knowledge about the regional lithospheric and upper mantle structure. Our findings suggest that a deep (ca. 420–320 km) mantle anomaly, with seismological characteristics of the Iceland mantle plume, extends from East Greenland to the north of Jan Mayen Fracture Zone. The regional lithospheric thinning toward the Greenland Basin enabled the melting events that produced the Vesteris seamount. This lateral NNE‐directed flow lobe of the Iceland plume may have carved and transferred enriched components from the continental lithospheric margin of Greenland north of Scoresby Sund toward the Vesteris source.

Vesteris is a large (33 × 27 km) and young (summit age: 0.65–0.010 Ma) intraplate seamount in the Greenland Sea, formed from ocean island basalt (OIB) magmatism. The volcano is composed of alkali basalt, basanite/tephrite, phonotephrite, mugearite, and benmoreite. Its phenocryst assemblage includes clinopyroxene, plagioclase, olivine, amphibole, rare haüyne, and oxides (Ti–magnetite and Cr–spinel), with phenocrysts hosting inclusions of apatite, sulfides (pyrrhotite), and melt. Despite its geological significance, the processes governing magma storage, ascent, and eruption dynamics remain poorly understood. To address this, we conducted detailed micro–chemical analyses of phenocrysts, groundmass microcrysts, melt inclusions, and groundmass glass. Using mineral–melt thermobarometry, we characterized the pre– to syn–eruptive crystallization conditions and reconstructed the architecture of the volcanic plumbing system. Our findings indicate that basanite liquids were primarily stored in the upper mantle (∼6.4 kbar; ∼22 km depth) with evidence of multi-level storage extending to ∼9 kbar (∼30 km depth). Textural and compositional zoning in clinopyroxenes suggests rapid magma ascent, while mafic recharge emerged as a key mechanism for remobilizing evolved clinopyroxene mush. Mafic recharge magmas also introduced early olivine crystals, which were later overgrown by high-Mg clinopyroxene upon mixing with more evolved melts. These results demonstrate that major crystal fractionation occurs in the upper mantle beneath Vesteris, resembling processes observed in low-flux ocean island basalt volcanoes. The evidence for rapid magma ascent highlights the dynamic nature of magma movement within the plumbing system, driven by mafic recharge and crystal-melt interactions.

Abstract. Extensive fields of sub-kilometre- to kilometre-scale mounds, cones, domes, shields, and flow-like edifices cover large parts of the martian lowlands. These features have been compared to structures on Earth produced by sedimentary volcanism – a process that involves subsurface sediment/fluid mobilisation and commonly releases methane to the atmosphere. It was proposed that such processes might help to explain the presence of methane in the martian atmosphere and may also have produced habitable, subsurface settings of potential astrobiological relevance. However, it remains unclear if sedimentary volcanism on Earth and Mars share genetic similarities and hence if methane or other gases were released on Mars during this process. The aim of this review is to summarise the current knowledge about mud-volcano-like structures on Mars, address the critical aspects of this process, identify key open questions, and point to areas where further research is needed to understand this phenomenon and its importance for the Red Planet's geological evolution. We show here that after several decades of exploration, the amount of evidence supporting martian sedimentary volcanism has increased significantly, but as the critical ground truth is still lacking, alternative explanations cannot be ruled out. We also highlight that the lower gravity and temperatures on Mars compared to Earth control the dynamics of clastic eruptions and surface emplacement mechanisms and the resulting morphologies of erupted material. This implies that shapes and triggering mechanisms of mud-volcano-like structures may be different from those observed on Earth. Therefore, comparative studies should be done with caution. To provide a better understanding of the significance of these abundant features on Mars, we argue for follow-up studies targeting putative sedimentary volcanic features identified on the planet's surface and, if possible, for in situ investigations by landed missions such as that by the Zhurong rover.

The Dead Sea Fault (DSF) is a crustal-scale continental transform fault separating the African and the Arabian plates. Neogene to Quaternary volcanic activity is well-spread in Northern Israel. Yet, the origin of the magmas that fed the eruptions is still unpinned. Our local earthquake tomography depicts velocity distributions typical of rifting settings. At 9 km depth, a prominent high Vp/Vs anomaly marks the presence of cooling melts. We propose that protracted transtension along the DSF caused crustal thinning promoting the emplacement of magmatic bodies. Crustal emplacements of magmas in Northern Israel reconcile multiple observations, including the high geothermal gradient, the prominent magnetic anomalies and the traces of mantle-derived fluids in the springs across the Sea of Galilee. We provide a compelling evidence for rifting in segments of the DSF and identify the potential source of magmatism that fed part of the volcanic activity of the area.

North-east Java is part of a large sedimentary basin containing hydrocarbon provinces that feature diffuse hydrothermal systems, mud volcanoes, and degassing sites. Seismic profiles acquired to explore the basin reveal a broad distribution of palaeo- and modern piercement structures. The Watukosek fault system links the volcanic arc, to the south, with the Sidoarjo province, to the north. Several piercement structures, including the Kalang Anyar mud volcano, are hosted along this left-lateral strike-slip system that favors the migration of crustal fluids in this part of the basin. Here, we present a multidisciplinary geological, geophysical and geochemical study conducted at Kalang Anyar where dozens of seepage sites are active in the crater area and intermittently emit bursts oil, gas, mud, and water. The emitted gasses are methane-dominated with smaller amounts of heavier hydrocarbons and CO2. Unlike most mud volcanoes, at Kalang Anyar the mixed-thermogenic origin of the methane is coupled with geothermal anomalies, as indicated by helium and CO2 isotopic values (δ13CCO2 as high as −4‰) that suggest the input of mantle-derived gas. Our gas flux measurements reveal that Kalang Anyar emits about 1.62 and 5.75 t yr−1 of CO2 and CH4, respectively. The intense bubbling gives rise to a typical drumbeat seismic signal characterized by dominant frequencies around of 3–4 Hz (and up to 15 Hz). We interpret the drumbeat as fluids rising and resonating through shallow plumbing system of Kalang Anyar. Erupted clasts with different lithologies and shells are scattered across the mud volcano area, while the edges of the crater zone include cubic meter-sized carbonate-cemented blocks and ridges that contain siliciclastic sediments and abundant chemosymbiotic bivalves. Carbon isotope analyses of the carbonate cement (δ13C as low as −48.8‰) identify the latter as methanogenic chemoherms. Radiocarbon (14C) dating of bivalves cemented in the blocks indicates an age of 1890-1488 BP. These results indicate that the activity of Kalang Anyar MV dates from when the area was below sea level and that the microbially-mediated precipitation of carbonates was ongoing during subaqueous methane seepage at the crater site. To the best of our knowledge, Kalang Anyar is the first example of a mud volcano that progressed from subaqueous to subaerial conditions during marine regression, displaying evidence of former marine activity (i.e. methanogenic carbonates) and current subaerial degassing at numerous seepage sites. Potentially eruptive phases represent a clear geohazard for the numerous settlements constructed inside the mud volcano. In light of this, it may be prudent to apply stricter rules for development activities, such as housing construction permits that consider the possibility of potentially catastrophic events, and apply steps to mitigate these hazards.

New high-resolution geophysical data acquired from eastern Storbanken in the central Barents Sea allow reconstruction of the flow of marine-based ice dome during the final stages of ice-sheet decay. Ice-marginal and subglacial landforms show diverging and quasi-radial grounding-line retreat patterns, implying that an isolated, dynamic, shrinking ice dome was centred at ∼77° N 40° E on eastern Storbanken prior to final marine-based ice-sheet collapse. This geomorphological reconstruction contrasts with previous numerical and observational models that infer a northward-migrating ice dome or crest that extended longitudinally from Svalbard to Franz-Josef Land prior to its eventual demise. Our results provide an important past analogue for late-stage decay of marine ice domes, as well as robust empirical constraints that can be used to calibrate numerical models simulating the behaviour of marine-based ice sheets in a warming environment.

The paper presents results of gas-geochemical studies of bottom sediments and petroleum potential assessment of Baikal Rift Basin. During the expeditions of the Class@Baikal project in 2014–2019, gases from the Lake Baikal bottom sediments were analyzed. The results showed a clear difference in chemical and isotopic composition of the seeping gases collected in the northwestern and southeastern parts of the lake. The seepage released from northwest part were relatively enriched by methane and had a low concentration of C2+ compounds. The seepage gases had relatively lighter carbon isotopes composition of CH4 (from -72,7 to -50,1 ‰ VPDB) and the high variability of δ13C in C2H6 (from -65 to -22 ‰ VPDB). The gases released from southeastern part of the lake had an increase in C2+ compounds and had relatively lighter carbon isotopes composition of methane (from –57,2 to –41,0 ‰ VPDB). The carbon isotopes composition of ethane varies from -32 to -25 ‰ VPDB. Asymmetric structure of the Baikal rift basin and various processes of gas migration within it might cause the variations. Diffusive process led to the lighter carbon isotopes composition of the seepage gases from the northwestern part of lake and the gas molecular composition enrichment by methane. Such molecular and isotopic fractionations caused by geochemical processes helps to understand the migration of gas from source rocks to the earth’s surface. Similar geochemical indicators of fractionation should be taken into consideration when assessing oil and gas source rocks and basin potential from gas geochemical studies data.

Mud volcanoes are rapidly-evolving geological phenomena characterized by the surface expulsion of sediments and fluids from over-pressurized underlying reservoirs. We investigate the Nirano Mud Volcano, Northern Italy, with seismic methods to better understand the dynamic evolution of the system and shed light on its subsurface structure. Our study allowed to detect and characterize three different types of high-frequency drumbeat signals that are present in the most active part of the mud volcano plumbing system. With a back-projection method based on the cross-correlation envelope of signals recorded at different station pairs, we can determine the source location of the drumbeats. These coincide with the location of V/H (vertical-to-horizontal) amplitude peaks obtained from an ambient vibration profile and resistivity anomalies identified in a previous study. We observe that the drumbeats are P-wave dominated signals, with characteristics similar to those found in magmatic settings, i.e. LPs (long-period signals). We suggest that such tremors originate from the migration of mud and gas inside the mud volcanic conduits. The source location, waveform and frequency content of the drumbeats evolve over time. We found that drumbeat occurrence is directly linked with morphological changes at surface.

East Java is characterised by a complex interaction of volcanic and tectonic processes and it is marked by isolated eruptive centres scattered across the back-arc sedimentary basins. In 2006 a large sediment hosted geothermal system named Lusi, pierced the Kendeng basin in East Java and since then it continues in a relentless eruption of mud breccia. To investigate the spatial and structural relationships between the volcanic arc and the back-arc domains, we perform a local earthquake tomography. The inversion of regional earthquakes recorded by our seismic network (for about two years) shows sharp Vp and Vp/Vs transitions. We observe a marked reduction of P-wave velocities and a high Vp/Vs ratio in the back-arc basins. Our study highlights a clear connection between the plumbing system of the volcanic arc and the northern sedimentary province. We propose a conceptual model suggesting that magmas and hydrothermal fluids may migrate from the middle to the upper crust into the sedimentary basins capitalising on existing thrust faults. Such low angle faults, promoted by the compressional regime of the region, link the magmatic domain to the northern sedimentary provinces. This process may represent the early phase of volcanic arc migration when magma-derived fluids are focused into fractured and permeable geological structures. Our conceptual model would not only help to understand the occurrence of the abundant mantle-derived fluids sampled across the back-arc, but it is also consistent with the occurrence of isolated magmatic and hybrid systems piercing across sedimentary environments in the back-arc of Java.

Abstract Quantifying natural geological sources of methane (CH 4 ) allows to improve the assessment of anthropogenic emissions to the atmosphere from fossil fuel industries. The global CH 4 flux of geological gas is, however, an object of debate. Recent fossil ( 14 C-free) CH 4 measurements in preindustrial-era ice cores suggest very low global geological emissions (~ 1.6 Tg year −1 ), implying a larger fossil fuel industry source. This is however in contrast with previously published bottom-up and top-down geo-emission estimates (~ 45 Tg year −1 ) and even regional-scale emissions of ~ 1–2 Tg year −1 . Here we report on significant geological CH 4 emissions from the Lusi hydrothermal system (Indonesia), measured by ground-based and satellite (TROPOMI) techniques. Both techniques indicate a total CH 4 output of ~ 0.1 Tg year −1 , equivalent to the minimum value of global geo-emission derived by ice core 14 CH 4 estimates. Our results are consistent with the order of magnitude of the emission factors of large seeps used in global bottom-up estimates, and endorse a substantial contribution from natural Earth’s CH 4 degassing. The preindustrial ice core assessments of geological CH 4 release may be underestimated and require further study. Satellite measurements can help to test geological CH 4 emission factors and explain the gap between the contrasting estimates.

Natural hydrogen present in the subsurface is highly reactive, but a better understanding of the behavior of this molecule is important for developing to successful exploration models. The aim of this contribution is to present the state-state-of-the-art geochemical and microbiological processes that primarily consume natural hydrogen during its migration through the subsurface, and its retention while stored in the reservoir. Our approach combines published information with results from ongoing and past projects. In particular, we aim to investigate how pressure and temperature conditions control the different phase of hydrogen during migration and retention (hydrogen as free gas, microbubbles or dissolved in water). We will further examine how hydrogen's phase influences its reactivity with water and the surrounding rocks, affecting reaction rates and hydrogen consumption. In addition, we present the preliminary results from theoretical calculations of microbial consumption processes occurring at deep surface reservoirs using available data on cell numbers, metabolisms and reaction rates from hydrogen underground storage projects. The values will enable realistic and worst-case scenario of hydrogen consumption, which can be included in hydrogen reservoir stability assessments. The outcomes of this study will serve as constrains for follow up numerical models of natural hydrogen systems within the project H2-QUEST under the Joint Undertaking of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.

Natural Gas Venting in the Tampen Area, Northern North Sea: Insights from Subsurface and Glacial Interactions.

The Tampen area, located along the western bank of the Norwegian Channel in the northern North Sea, is a region of significant natural gas venting activity. Understanding seepage mechanisms here, is however challenging due to subsurface lithological heterogeneity caused by glacial erosion and deposition, as well as acoustic disturbances beneath the seepage zones.
To address these challenges, we conducted a detailed subsurface investigation using high-resolution 3D seismic data that revealed bright amplitude anomalies concentrated beneath the seepage sites that relate to two distinct depocenters hosting high-porosity sediments that act as reservoirs for trapped gas.
The primary depocenter exhibits a wedge-shaped geometry, with bright anomalies arranged in a delta-like pattern. The secondary depocenter is associated with a single, large glacial lineation near the bank area, forming a cavity filled with fine to coarse sediments. We propose a conceptual model outlining a series of geological events that began around 30 ka BP. During a relative sea-level low stand (~25–30 ka BP), significant sandy deposits accumulated, which were later submerged during subsequent high stands. This was followed by the advance of ice sheets, which contributed to extensive glacial erosion and deformation of these deposits. Additionally, the sediments infilling the glacial lineation are attributed to an ice-dammed lake outburst event that occurred during the collapse of grounded ice across the North Sea shelf after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).
Fluid escape pathways are mainly along the wedge's western boundary, where eastward-dipping sandy beds aid upward migration. Gas seepage is influenced by glacial deformation and the thickness and distribution of lateral moraines.
This study highlights the interplay between glacial processes, subsurface lithology, and fluid migration in shaping natural gas venting in the Tampen area. The continuous seepage in this narrow corridor underscores the importance of understanding its impact on climate change and the risks it poses for drilling in sensitive environments.

Methane emissions from the North Sea are strongly influence by subsurface fluid migration processes, particularly around complex geological structures and legacy wells. As part of the WELLFATE project, we integrate high-resolution seismic interpretation with advanced numerical simulations to investigate fluid flow in the Tampen area.
Our modelling framework couples seismic-derived stratigraphy and property cubes with a fully coupled poroviscoelastic approach. The governing equations account for mass and force balance, Darcy flow, and permeability evolution, and are solved using a physics-inspired pseudo-transient method on staggered grids. This approach enables the simulation of both vertical and horizontal migration pathways, capturing the effects of geological heterogeneities such as clinoforms and block structures. The model incorporates mechanisms such as porosity waves, where asymmetric compaction and decompaction rheology lead to the formation of focused fluid channels. We systematically explore the impact of material property contrasts, layer width, and multi-layered systems on channel development and deformation. GPU-accelerated computations allow for large-scale 2D and 3D simulations, with model sizes up to 10,000 × 10,000 nodes in 2D and 500 × 500 × 500 in 3D. Preliminary results show that narrow geological blocks tend to deflect fluid laterally with minimal deformation, while wider blocks allow for slower, more vertically focused channel development and significant deformation. Intra-reservoir channels create high-permeability pathways, facilitating methane migration towards the seabed. The permeability of overlying layers is a key control on shallow migration and potential methane leakage. This integrated framework provides new insights into the controls on methane seepage in the North Sea, supporting improved risk assessment and mitigation strategies for offshore methane emissions.

WELLFATE Understanding Fluid Migration Processes at Offshore Well Sites.

The Norwegian Continental Shelf is a vast petroleum province with about 8000 wells (nearly 2,000 exploration and almost 6000 development wells), which have either been plugged and abandoned (P&A) or are heading for decommissioning. The integrity of these wells has been recently questioned, with suspected methane seeps at several well sites raising serious implications for the environment and climate. However, the current paucity of direct observations and gas samples at these wells limits our confidence to constrain emission fluxes, fingerprint the origin of the methane and ultimately prevent us to correlate geology and well design to associated seepage. The goal of this contribution is to present the project WELLFATE and its current status. WELLFATE aims to understand the processes of fluid migration near offshore wells. Our multidisciplinary approach is to characterize wells associated with methane seeps by integrating direct seafloor observations, geophysical, geochemical, and geological data with well configuration and P&A data. We have so far conducted a first survey in 2024 and a second in 2025. During the latest, we used the Aurora ROV (RevOcean) for direct observations, gas sampling and flux measurements. In addition, we deployed a seabed observatory to monitor variations in methane concentration from July 2025 to spring/summer 2026. This strategy will allow us to confidently interpret fluid migration pathways, define the origin of the fluids, date the onset of leakage, and relate the system's dynamics with well configuration and geology to identify critical wells and predict possible locations of fluid escape. Ultimately, the project results can be used to develop guidelines and best practices to optimize well-decommissioning protocols and/or implement early drilling strategies to prevent lateral fracturing in sensitive sedimentary units and propose possible solutions to mitigate seeps associated with wells.

Natural Methane Seepage and Fluid Migration Pathways in the Tampen Slide: Insights from Structural and Seismic Analysis.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv
Vis sammendrag
Natural methane seepage systems in the northern North Sea provide important insights into how submarine landslides, faults, and glaciogenic sediments interact to control fluid migration and seafloor venting. During a recent WELLFATE scientific cruise, we investigated methane seepages in the Norwegian Trench at a water depth of ~375 m.
The seepages are concentrated along the upper headwall of the Tampen Slide (age ~ 71–120 ka before present), including one site where a methane-rich mud flow was observed. This occurrence illustrates how buried slide deposits and overlying glaciogenic sediments can act together to govern fluid migration pathways.
Seismic data reveal a fault beneath the upper headwall that cuts through clinoforms below the slide mass and merges with the upper slide wall. This fault likely serves as a vertical migration pathway, linking deeper gas-charged zones to the seabed. The chaotic slide mass, characterized by negative seismic anomalies, suggests the presence of trapped gas within slurry-like deposits generated during mass failure. We propose that during clinoform development, gas accumulated within sand-rich intervals. The subsequent collapse of the slide mass likely sealed these gas pockets, burying them beneath contorted sediments and glaciogenic overburden. Over time, the deposition of additional glacial sediments, particularly during the Late Weichselian (Last Glacial Maximum), contributed to overpressure buildup. Fault activity further facilitated fluid expulsion, with fluids migrating upward along fault planes and the slide wall. The observed methane-rich mud flow is likely a surface expression of deeper, overpressured zones releasing fluids through fracture networks.
Near the deeper main headwall of the slide, we also identified three mound-like features associated with negative seismic anomalies. One of the largest has an elliptical geometry with a major axis of ~1700 m and a minor axis of ~1100 m. These features are interpreted as remnants of a buried ancient mud-volcano system. Although the deeper system now appears inactive due to thick overburden, it may have indirectly contributed by supplying fluids to the overlying clinoforms. The clinoforms, which display bright spots suggestive of gas presence, outcrop at the upper regional unconformity and may help sustain ongoing seepages by recharging very shallow subsurface strata.
Overall, our findings indicate a strong linkage between ancient and modern fluid migration systems, driven by overpressure, structural weaknesses, and glaciogenic sedimentation
