Perineuronal nets (PNNs) are extracellular matrix structures mainly enwrapping parvalbumin-expressing inhibitory neurons.
- Knockout of ACAN in PV+ cells inhibit formation of WFA positive perineuronal nets (PNNs) around PV+ cells.
- ACAN KO mice show lower level of anxiety-related behavior. In the morris watermaze they employ bolder search strategy, but long-term memory is the same.
- The absence of WFA+ labeled PNNs had little to no impact on memory processing or the intrinsic physiological properties of PV+ interneurons in V1.
- Our discoveries could put into question the role of PNNs in memory processing, and challenge the notion that PV+ neurons are reliant on PNNs as a facilitator.
