Faglige interesser

Gruppen til Ute Krengel bestemmer molekylstrukturene av proteiner ned til atomær oppløsning. Hovedfokuset er på proteiner av medisinsk interesse, og spesielt på protein-karbohydrat interaksjoner. Protein-karbohydrat interaksjoner er sentrale i mange biologiske prosesser (f.eks. interaksjoner mellom celler, cellulær signalisering og differensiering, og immunrespons).

Å forstå karbohydratenes rolle i disse prosessene, og hvordan de vekselvirker med proteiner er forventet å få avgjørende betydning for utvikling av nye behandlingsformer for mange sykdommer.

Forskningen innebærer et nært samarbeid med andre forskningsgrupper (biokjemikere, molekyl-modellerere, bioinformatikere samt NMR-spektroskopikere og massespektrometrikere), noe som garanterer at strukturstudier av utvalgte forskningsmål kan utføres hånd i hånd med protein "engineering", bindingsstudier, mikrokalorimetri og molekylmodellering.
