Transient kinetic studies of industrial ammonia oxidation catalysts

Catalytic ammonia oxidation is used in industry to produce nitric acid - one of the most important industrial chemicals critical for fertilizer production. Currently, ammonia is oxidized on PtRh catalysts which are volatile at high temperatures, leading to substantial losses of these very expensive metals.

In this project, you will work with industrial researchers to investigate the mechanism of ammonia oxidation on benchmark as well as novel heterogeneous catalysts to assist in process optimization. Advanced Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) reactor will be used to unravel the reaction mechanism through transient kinetic experiments and data modeling. This project offers a unique chance to participate in industrially-relevant research and development, while learning valuable hands-on experimental and modeling skills.

Skills to be developed:

  •  Hands-on experiments with Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) reactor
  •  Quantitative evaluation and analysis of transient mass-spectrometric data
  •  Correlative data interpretation within a team of academic and industrial researchers

Supervisors:

Prof. Evgeniy Redekop (UiO), Dr. David Waller (Yara Int.)
